Swim
Comments: I seeded myself in front middle, but I never got a lot of clear water, unless I was off course. I couldn't draft as everyone I caught I immediately was on top of. One person tried to draft me for a bit but they kept hitting my ankles so I increased my kick to get some distance and make them aware. About half way through I took a foot in the left google. I wondered if I would end up with a black eye. What would you do differently?: I need to sight a little more often (though once I actually sighted and picked up one of the swim caps that was the same color as the buoy). Even though I'm near the FOP in my swim times I am also competely wiped out. I need to do more hard swim efforts followed by a bike. Transition 1
Comments: I was pretty wiped out from the swim, but I took my garmin out of my cap as I ran and put it on my wrist. I lost my cap on the way to the bike. I got my socks halo and helmet on, the socks were a little stuck. I ran part way there was a line though leaving T1. And then I really screwed up. I didn't get enough speed up before I got on the bike and it was swaying from side to side as I was trying to get on top of the shoes. I was cutoff and then they stopped us and I had to try it again... this time though I slammed one foot into the ground and the other shoe came off the pedal. A volunteer brought it to the side and I took my bike there as well and got it on, I left the other shoe clipped in and was fine from there. What would you do differently?: Twice I've practiced getting on the bike with the shoes clipped in. It went smoothly at Shadow Creek as well as my practice the day before this race. I think the trick is to practice it when my HR is through the roof. Bike
Comments: My HR was really high starting the bike and I never felt like it was under control. I was passed way more than I passed others. I had a bit of trouble finding the right cadence and felt I was mashing more than I should have, but the next easier gear often felt like I was spinning too fast. What would you do differently?: Bike fitness. I think I just need to do more miles, and probably do more bikes right after a swim. Drink a little less. I was hot but I wasn't dehydrated. And my stomach was hurting by the end and through the run Transition 2
Comments: Dismount wasn't great, but far better than the mount so I'll take it. I started to move the garmin as I ran (should have done it on the bike). The bike didn't want to go under the rack at first for some reason. I took an extra second to swap to a dry Halo after i got my shoes on and ran out while clipping on my race belt. What would you do differently?: Move the garmin sooner on the bike. Do a bit of a better job of the dismount, just practice more. Also, I think I need to take some time pre race to see where the bike dismount is, and what the last mile of the course is like so I know when to prepare the dismount. Run
Comments: I thought my limiter would be my calf injury. In fact even when I was exiting the swim I felt it and thought it was going to stop my run. Instead it was just overall fitness. I never reached major pain on my calf, in fact it seemed to get better along the way. However, I didn't run that much. I ran the first quarter mile or so, then ran/walked the rest. I think my longest run was maybe 3/4ths of a mile. I just couldn't keep myself going. This may have been partly heat related as my Run time was longer than my bike time, but my run placement was higher than my bike placement (at least amoungst us old Clydesdales). What would you do differently?: Run more (if my calf allows it) and probably more brics. I need to train my body to go longer. Post race
Warm down: Wandered down and watched for my wife. I had seen her on the bike and run so knew she was about 2 miles behind me. What limited your ability to perform faster: My fitness level. Event comments: OnUrMark does 3 tris in the area every year. My first race in April was one of these, my next race in Septermber is the 3rd one. There is a reason I'll do all 3. Checked in the bikes the night before with shoes and helmet so not a lot of stuff to take, but tripple checked.
Ate a banana on the drive and a few sips of coffee.
Had a 10 min wait to get into transition so didn't have a ton of time.
Jumped in the lake and did a 100 meters or so. Big crowd so not a lot of open water even before the race.
