Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45 to get ready for the 90 minute drive. Stopped twice along the way. Once to get some caffeine and gas. The other was a bathroom break BEFORE using the on race bathrooms.

Ate a gel right before start.
Event warmup:

No real warm up. Set up my bike and made the long walk to the river.
Swim
  • 21m 13s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Did really well the first third. I stayed with my group and navigated perfectly to the turn buoy.
After the first turn I was having a harder time to navigate but was still doing well. Ran into a couple of people floating in front of me.
The third leg was awful. It was directly into the sun. I had to stop many times to try and get my positioning. Other waves were catching me and swimming over me. I think it took as long to finish the last third as it did the first 2/3 combined.
What would you do differently?:

Forget about the sun and just swim hard for the shore. Once the trees block the sun then look up.
Transition 1
  • 04m 14s
Comments:

LONG run to transition. The announcer said it was over a 1/4 mile. I measured it at close to .5
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I had a great transition. 3/28 in age group. I was extremely happy.
Bike
  • 36m 28s
  • 12.89 miles
  • 21.21 mile/hr
Comments:

Got passed twice, really there were people behind me on the swim? Once I got out on the road I was averaging over 23 before the turn to come back. After the turn back I started to get a cramp in my right leg. The cramp went away when a minivan touched me on a turn. The adrenaline got me going.

Found out my back brake was rubbing. I thought I fixed this I guess not.
What would you do differently?:

Take the release off the brake. I will not stop as quickly but guarantied no rubbing. Took a lot out of me to keep that pace with brake on.
Transition 2
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

I was tired but had a good transition. 14/28 for age group.
What would you do differently?:

Need to learn to run without socks. This will take 15-20 seconds off time.
Run
  • 22m 45s
  • 3.15 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

They changed the course from last year. No more running over playwood bridges. YES!!!

I held a good pace for me. 7:18 until the finish were I slowed down. Not sure why.
What would you do differently?:

Don't slow down for the finish.
Post race
Warm down:

slice of za and waited a LONG time for them to open transition.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Brake on during bike. $%#$@^ It is a new bike what the heck.

Event comments:

Love this race. Plan on doing the Half at the same location next year.
