Swim
Comments: The swim was farther than 500 yards for sure. I was hoping to have a time around 9-9.30 for 500 yards. The top male finishers were around 11 minutes with the 3rd place finisher coming in over 13 for the swim. I would probably put the distance at or around 650-700 yards. I felt fine the entire swim, a lot different than Hawk Island Tri. I came out of the water at 12.17 with a short run to the transition area put my time at 12.56. I was relaxed and swam easy....I know I will never blow anyone out of the water but for me I was pleased with my swim portion. What would you do differently?: I need to push a little bit harder on the final 150-200 meters. Transition 1
Comments: My wetsuit got stuck on my heals for s few seconds and I need to practice at getting more efficient. Overall my T1 was fine What would you do differently?: Get out of my wetsuit quicker Bike
Comments: I would have liked to average between 20-21 mph and know I could have pushed harder on the bike. There were some really fast cyclists out there today and I need to practice and ride harder to increase my speed. Around mile 2 the road had been freshly sealed making it rough and there was some loose stone. It was only for about a 1 mile so no big deal really. What would you do differently?: Push harder Transition 2
Comments: T2 seemed to go smoothly for me, nothing really held me up that I noticed. Run
Comments: Going into the run I was nervous because of my calf strain that I had been nursing for the past 2 weeks. I only ran twice in the last couple of weeks so I really didn't know what to expect. The good news was that I felt no pain in my leg during the entire run.. The first few minutes seemed slow but I started to feel fine about half way through. My split time according to my watch was 11.22 at the halfway point and 10.55 at the finish. What would you do differently?: Try to catch my breath and legs early during the run Post race
Warm down: Grabbed some water and a banana and cooled down. Was going to leave but to my surprise I found out that I won my AG so I stuck around for the awards. Met and spoke with a fellow BTer, Andrew Brazee, who took 2nd place in our AG. (Great guy by the way) What limited your ability to perform faster: I need to get faster on the bike, which means putting in more miles and time Event comments: This race was brought back from 18 years ago and overall I think it was done well. Some suggestions might be to put mile markers out on the run along with some water stations. I saw 3 guys turn around during the run, 2 turned around about the 1 mile marker and I heard them say that they made a wrong turn and ran an extra 1/2 mile. On my way back on the run I observed a group of people running towards me and the trail guy turned around and headed back. He had about 1/4 mile to go to get to the turn around. Not sure why these guys turned around and I always thought it was the racers responsibility to stay on course. I thought the run course was marked fine but maybe not for other people, so maybe a few more cones or volunteers to help people stay on course. Overall, I thought the race was done well considering it was brought back from 18 years ago. The racers were all great, the weather was beautiful and I will be back next year. Woke up and had some toast with Nutella and packed the car. My wife was supposed to race with me but she came down with the flu and couldn't go....felt very bad for her. Left the house around 5:15 am and arrived at Gull Lake at 6:10.
Stretched and rolled my legs and neck. Put on my wet suit and swam for about 5 minutes before the first wave went.
