Pre-race routine:

Got there a little on late side - would have been ok except for only 1 restroom = time wasted.
Event warmup:

Got off bike from a 1 mile spin to get gearing set with 8 minutes before race start. shuffled 150 meters to beach trying to get wetsuit on. Got in water for 1 minute to pee.
Swim
  • 09m 20s
  • 500 meters
  • 01m 52s / 100 meters
Comments:

Purposefully went slow at first. Got feet of another elite guy 20 pulls in and drafted off him for entire event until last 75m and then separated from him by about 5 meters. Best drafting swim ever. Never felt anaerobic and just felt calm and smooth. I could have gone this pace for 1.2 miles.
What would you do differently?:

Separated from the guy I was drafting off of 50meters earlier and picked up another 5-10 seconds of time. Every second counts in a sprint.
Transition 1
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

Left heel got stuck on wetsuit = lost 5 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Need to be more aggressive with getting suit off.
Bike
  • 22m 43s
  • 8.9 miles
  • 23.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Didnt enter the pain cave enough - caught up to 200m behind Moody at mile 3 and never pushed to close gap - group of 3 bikers that passed me pretty much drafted entire race. Disappointing - the USAT ref. was soft.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder when the 3 elites went past in order to maintain contact. They had 45-60 seconds on me entering T2.
Transition 2
  • 00m 28s
Comments:

Great T2 - no time to shave here- flew in and out of transition - made up some of the time I lost to the 3 bikers.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 21m 51s
  • 3.22 miles
  • 06m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Lost 30-45 seconds to trying to not get lost.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Race course poorly marked.

Event comments:

First year for the RD and race - lots to be learned for this guy - the poor course marking cost Moody 1st and me some time.
I could have gone harder in all 3 disciplines - Mentally, a little on soft side. Not sure if I would do it again. Will be interested in seeing what official splits and time was, especially, since bike course mileage for not correct.

Course: Poorly marked course - in the woods through mud, tons of turns and up/downs - Xterra trail run. Had to slow twice to figure out where in the heck I was - trails criss crossing all over the place. Disappointed at RD for not having it obvious as to correct path.
