Pat Griskus Triathlon Series

Total Time = 1h 10m 39s
Overall Rank = 58/468
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 12/47
Pre-race routine:

This is a weekday 6pm start, so left work early (330pm) much to my boss' disappointment. Arrive in +90F heat, changed, registered and started setting up. Drank my G1 and some water. Sky started getting dark, so I quickly got a warm up swim in and wandered. Then about 15-20 minutes before race time, the rain started. A bit of lightning, so delayed until about 6:25 when it was still lightly raining and temps had dropped to low/mid 70's. Unfortunately, it felt cold and muscles tightened, but no whining - same conditions for everyone.
Event warmup:

Tried to time a swim warm-up but delayed start negated any positive impact from that.
Swim
  • 15m 9s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started poorly and got squeezed out. My watch started falling off, so I paused to try and re-wrap it - I got run over! Bad move. Then I focused and did well.
What would you do differently?:

Fix my watch band.
Transition 1
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

I went barefoot into the bike shoes and that cut time nicely. Was still a bit slow, but an improvement for sure. 23rd best T1 - I'll take it!
What would you do differently?:

Rack my bike with handlebars toward rack vs. hanging from the seat.
Bike
  • 31m 22s
  • 10.5 miles
  • 20.09 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a good ride - no accidents on wet conditions, which is the most important result. Felt strong the whole way and passed more than got passed. Many first timers ahead of me from wave 1 and 2 that road in the middle (vs keeping to the right), which caused some dangerous passes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing just continued training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Not so good on T2. Took way too long to put on socks and shoes. 264th best time here - need to improve.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure yet - just speed up I guess
Run
  • 22m 5s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

My run was OK, but still lacking the speed to get me into a better overall time. Started slow and picked up as I got going. Felt minor cramps in my calf and shoulder - not sure why - I havent had a cramp in ages.
What would you do differently?:

Speed training - I did some, but not enough.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a gatorade and hot dog. Wandered a bit and actually saw someone I knew! Chatted then went back to transition and packed up my soaking wet stuff. Nasty.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Had a good race, just need to get faster. Maybe better pre-race stretching and hydration for the cramps.

Event comments:

Its a good race and a great venue. Griskus and Quassy can handle a big crowd very well. Rain was a bummer, but everything worked out fine. A finishers towel (Gatorade sponsor???) might have been nice swag instead of a rose (?!?!) but pleased with this race and would do it again. Great job by finishing announcer and volunteers.
