Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 6, showered. Cup of coffee, small bowl of cereal and some Fage. Left a little later than I would have liked living so close to the race. Didn't get to transition area until around 8 or so. Packed way too much crap.
Event warmup:

Walked around lost and nervous for a bit pretending I knew what I was doing. A number of easy runs and strides barefoot on grass to get HR up a bit. Waited in line at porta. Actually put wetsuit on backwards first time, didn't notice until I realized I was zipping up in front. Nerves. I really did bring too much stuff, but partly because of weather and wanting to cover in case it poured. Hammer gel on way down to lake.
Swim
  • 10m 30s
  • 580 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Really damn happy seeing as I had absolutely no idea what would happen here having started swimming 6/7 weeks ago (and not being able to do a 100 w/o stopping) and not even coming close to OWS until 48 hours prior. Just treaded water for a while and started at whistle. A large number of the wave shot out ahead of me at start, but I passed 4 or 5 about half way in. Jostled with another dude on home stretch as he boxed me out. Liked it. Concentrated on letting my legs chill out, slow everything down, grab, pause and pull.
What would you do differently?:

Need more water time for sure. I also need to learn to exhale under water. I'm not being efficient exhaling and inhaling above water every stroke.
Transition 1
  • 04m 20s
Comments:

200 yard run from water exit to entrance to transition area. I was a little zonked coming out of the water, caught my breath a little on this run. Wetsuit strippers were awesome. Socks took some time getting on to wet feet. probably wasted time getting gloves on. Forgot to put my clif blocks in pocket. Would have preferred that I did. Overall disappointed in T1 time
What would you do differently?:

Get there earlier in morning to have room to set up more efficiently. Hopefully not have towels on top to dig thru. Maybe go sockless.
Bike
  • 53m 30s
  • 16 miles
  • 17.94 mile/hr
Comments:

Disappointed here a bit, both relative to the field and average MPH given there weren't any really big climbs. I've had similar speeds on my 25 mile plus training rides on Rte 23. Not sure if I'm beating myself up here or not, but I thought I did pretty well, passing a lot of people, and really only getting passed by elites. I can't think of anywhere on the course that I was lagging, maybe I'm just slower than I think. Had some gel on the first loop.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster. Try to drink more. Find a way to be more efficient on hills.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Got a little crossed up in the transition, taking the long way around to my slot. Was relatively quick getting my shoes on. Still, pretty surprised that it took 2 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Go the quick way to my slot.
Run
  • 27m
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Came out of transition going WAY way too fast. Ratcheted it down pretty quickly after a bit, and got into a decent rhythm. Kept pace pretty even. Splits of 8:36, 8:16, 8:25. Had enough for a great kick to finish. I didn't leave much in the tank overall.
What would you do differently?:

Don't rocket out of the gates, especially when my legs are trashed.
Post race
Warm down:

Was pretty gassed through the line, but I've been worse (Thursday's hot Fast 5K comes to mind. Great to see the family waiting for me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

For my first Tri, I'm pretty excited. I had two goals, one be in the top half of the race (accomplished in overall, not in age group). Not knowing what a reasonably good time was, I was hoping for 1:30. That may have been aggressive, but I would have been close had I had better transitions, and gained a minute or two on either run/bike leg. Either way, I'm stoked with the accomplishment and finish.

Event comments:

Great family Tri. Super for the first time. Tons of volunteers, tons of fan support across race, overall great vibe. Couldn't be happier.
