Overall Rank = 6/182

Age Group Rank = 1/25
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:00. I drove the hour from Edisto to James Island and found the race venue easily. The usual stuff.
Event warmup:

Ran 2 miles with pickups. Swam about 200 yards.
Swim
  • 09m 50s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim is still by far my weakest event, but relative to previous performances, I felt pretty good about this swim, and certainly the pace was better than it has been. Sighting went well, and I finished at least able to see some of the open athletes, unlike in my previous stints in the open division. I think the time includes a 50-75yd run into transition.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Transition 1
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Well, I didn't realize that there was a separate transition area for open athletes, so I definitely lost a few seconds or so in T1 and more than that in T2 because of this mistake. Otherwise, fine (second fastest T1 overall).
What would you do differently?:

Pay attention.
Bike
  • 26m 59s
  • 11.8 miles
  • 26.24 mile/hr
Comments:

Less than a minute off the fastest ride. Considering how little I've been riding lately, I feel good about that result.
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

A poor T2. I lost out a lot for not being in the open area on this one as it required an 'out and back' whereas the open athletes were able to run straight through. On top of that, I ran past my rack and had to run back two racks to my spot. Oh well. Everything else went very smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

Pay attention.
Run
  • 19m 28s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Not terrible considering my tired legs (over 65 miles this week so far). I came out of T2 5 yards behind another guy but he was too strong for me. On the other hand, I caught and passed two other guys, so overall, OK. Some day I'll do one of these with fresh legs and see what I can do.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around a bit, changed, ate a really good peach, and drove back to Edisto.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No taper. This was definitely a 'for fun' race, with no consideration in training. And it was indeed fun. I'd definitely do another one of these races if the opportunity presents itself.

Event comments:

A well run local race.
