Pre-race routine:

Woke up early ate breakfast. 1 scrambled egg, small glass of orange juice. Also had a small serving of cereal - fiber 1 with milk.

Had small sips of water leading up to the race. Was no over-hydrated though.
Event warmup:

Jogged around a bit and stretched. Did not do any kind of swim warmup.
Swim
  • 10m 53s
  • 580 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim felt very good. I felt confident and satisfied with my performance. I'm not sure how to draft in the water though.
What would you do differently?:

Possibly warm up first.
Transition 1
  • 02m
Comments:

I took the wet suit off myself and it went very smoothly. Glasses fogged up immediately after I put them on. Wasn't a big problem though. Mounting the bike went very well, I did a running and jump on mount. I could have clipped in faster though.
What would you do differently?:

Definitely need a flag at my transition area.
Bike
  • 50m 2s
  • 16 miles
  • 19.19 mile/hr
Comments:

I think I may have drank too much water (2/3rds of my bottle). The last 5 miles of the bike I got a major stomach cramp. When I transitioned to the run it got much worse. Ran through it until the last mile, then it went away. I didn't drink any water on the run.

Otherwise my bike felt great. I know I pushed a bit harder than we discussed, but I felt strong and confident. Bike performed well, no mechanical problems.

Towards the end of the bike, my right knee was getting sore, so I decided to put on my right knee-brace...this was a smart decision!
What would you do differently?:

I guess drink less water. I also did have nutrition in my tri top pockets, but it somehow managed to fall out somewhere...oh well.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

This transition was terrible. I had no idea where the dismount line was, it was very confusing. There was one woman with a flag saying slow down, but there was no defined point as to where the dismount was.

My dimount was fine, but it was just very confusing.
What would you do differently?:

Determine dismount line before the race. I also need to visualize myself before the racing coming into the transition area from a different area and where my stuff would be set up. Again, the flag would have been helpful.
Run
  • 24m 21s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Had a really bad stomach cramp the first 2 miles. I felt like I kept up the pace well, even with the cramp. If I didn't have the cramp, I could have run faster I think.

My right knee was also a royal pain, but I ran through it.
What would you do differently?:

With the circumstances coming into the run, I think I did really well. I wouldn't do anything differently. I did notice a few times my cadence slowed down though, so I need to focus on that a bit more. It was tough with the cramp and knee distractions though.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and stretched. Drank 1 12oz bottle of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stomach cramp and right knee.

Event comments:

The bike dismount was rough, that needs some work. Otherwise, the race seemed very organized and fun.
