Age Group Rank = 15/18
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15am to take some time to wake up. Had a Weight Watchers Canadian Bacon-Egg McMuffin and protein bar. Drank about 12oz of gatorade. Got the race site at around 5:50am....checked tire pressure and made my way down to the TA. Got everything set up and hit the restroom.
Event warmup:

Not much....just stood around talking to some friends and did some light stretching prior to start of the swim wave.
Swim
  • 21m 47s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

Judging by my time....I still need to train harder in this discipline. However, I will say this is the first open water swim where I did not scull on my back. I swam freestyle 95% of the time and occasionally jumped into the breast stroke to recover from getting kicked or getting out of line with the buoys. I can tell I am getting more comfortable in open water as I took this race real easy...nice slow pace to make sure I didn't get into a panicky state of mind. Endurance is fine....just really need to hit the weights this offseason to build some muscle in my arms.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing other than really trying to pick up the pace, but I was concerned I would go out too fast and then panic midway through the race.
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

Pretty easy transition....threw on my bike shoes. Still had trouble clicking into my helmet after adjusting it the night before. Need to get better at that as I couldv'e shaved another 7 seconds probably off this time. Glasses were fogged up too so I just ran with them in my mouth...need to figure out how to keep them from fogging up so bad.
What would you do differently?:

Practice clipping into that darn helmet!
Bike
  • 49m 33s
  • 16 miles
  • 19.37 mile/hr
Comments:

I was really happy with my overall pace on this ride...much better than expected, but I pretty much gave it everything I had knowing this was my last sprint for the season. I figured I would suck it up on the run. Started out pretty fast which threw me off for about the first 3 miles, but after that got into a nice rhythmn!
What would you do differently?:

Try to spin easy the first mile or so to get my heart rate down and get everything under control. Then I can get into the meat of the race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

I freaking missed my spot....first time I ever did this and had to backtrack slightly to get to my rack....lost about 15 seconds on that one!
What would you do differently?:

Remember where the hell my rack is!
Run
  • 26m 19s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs were a little fatigued from the ride, but I pushed through it and mad myself pick up the pace. Really kicked it in around mile 1 until I hit the hill at mile 2....never walked, but the pace did slow down a bit. Really pushed hard after the ascent and pushed a 7min/mile pace the last 3/4 mile. Still a little dissapointed with my time as I was shooting for 8min/mile pace....but I pushed real hard on the bike and knew it would be a matter of hanging in there the best I could on the run.
What would you do differently?:

More hill training...other than that pretty satisfied with my run.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a coke, some snacks and watched the other competitors come in...pretty low key.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much...I gave everything I had out there and was happy with my time. Beat my overall goal time by 2 minutes. Just more practice to get faster!

Event comments:

This was the last sprint for me of the season...not on to train for my International in October. Felt good after the race and celebrated with some Guinness that afternoon!
