Swim
Comments: Weather was cool and cloudy 'til the gun went off, so I used clear goggles, but smoked might have been better for sighting. Swim felt very smooth and fast, but was apparently slower than last year. Was among fewer people and didn't notice as much current carrying me along, so maybe that made the difference. Only breathed to the right, but that wasn't a problem. Knowing that I COULD go left helped. What would you do differently?: Push harder; get in a group for better drafting. Transition 1
Comments: Went well--mapping out route/running it a few times prior really helped. Took a GU chomp and some water in x-ition. No problems mounting the bike. What would you do differently?: Swim in my shirt; eat/drink on the bike instead. Go sock-less? Bike
Comments: Felt better than last year--def. more confident in the turns and getting water off the bike. Didn't wear bike shoes, so fewer worries there. Need to get legs stronger so I can push harder. Very good course; mostly considerate riders. (75th street is BUMPY). Want to take another 5-10 minutes off this ride. Cadence was ~70-80 generally. Towards the end reduced gears for a good recovery for the run, altho my feet went numb. What would you do differently?: Get back into the bike shoes; push harder. Eat/drink while on the bike instead of in transition. Transition 2
Comments: Very speedy x-ition, but I should've walked this route, too--got a bit befuddled with my row location. Feet completely numb after the bike, but the run out felt good and strong. Didn't change shoes, so that saved time. What would you do differently?: Practice getting off bike quicker. Walk route prior--duh. Also, I'll need to get back into my bike shoes, so practice that switch to sneaks. Run
Comments: First mile felt good--sub-10:00. Pity it didn't stay that way. :| Walked through water stations, and a few yards in mile 2. Found a very supportive pacer/buddy/"zombie" around 1.75, who kept on my heels and helped pace me the rest of the way. Saw coaches at 2.5, who pushed me to pick up the pace. Finished strong with a sprint with 0.1 left (ok, not a REAL sprint, but as much as I could muster). This route was longer than last year, but still felt short of a full 3.1. What would you do differently?: Keep running, keep running, keep running! And start out slower. Biking the route the day before and "marking" 0.1 left REALLY helped. Post race
Warm down: Took ice on my ankles from the med-tent, and did some stretching. Bananas & water & walking around after. What limited your ability to perform faster: My own conditioning, fear of bike shoes, and possibly the smoothness of my bike shifting (minimally). Event comments: One of the best races you'll ever do--now that they've got the run distance figured out. Added more potra-poties, thank heaven! VERY supportive racers and volunteers: a great first tri. Minor thing, but the chip straps were very comfy this year. Last updated: 2011-06-13 12:00 AM

BIG brekky, small lunch. Finished dinner by 8:30--fish, spinach, lite beer & pasta, and repacked gear @ hotel--very good to chill out solo. In bed by 9:30. Ate a pbj, water and 1/2 an Odwalla at 2 a.m. had trouble getting back to sleep, so I went over the race in my head. Woke @ 4:30 to get to x-ition by 5:15-ish--def. sleepy. Set up done by 5:45. Killed an hour warming up and scoping out the swim-in route to my rack.
Set up x-ition, peed, took a quick jog and listened to music to deal with my nerves. Ate a pack of GU chomps at 6:30 and had water. This new pre-race nutrition strategy seems to work well.
