Pre-race routine:

Didn't know I was racing in this event until earlier this week when I got an email saying I was needed...I was just planning on volunteering. I've done a few indivitual TTs before, but this would be my first team TT. Our team comprised of two really strong riders...I would put them at solid CAT3, myself, and a girl who's fairly strong. The plan going in would be to keep the girl in the draft at all times, then work out if we would need to do any rotation between the guys.

Bunch of last minute prep in the morning. Threw on the disc cover, threw everything in the car, and drove out to Laie. Sipped on gatorade...no breakfast.
Event warmup:

Rode about 20 minutes on the trainer.

Comments:

We had to keep the pace pretty mellow to make sure we didn't drop our girl. It's the third rider's time that counts...and one of them has to be the girl since were a mixed team.

So we start off with me an the strongest rider up front, the girl third, then the last guy 4th. Not sure why he was 4th wheel...I assume he was insurance in case we dropped the girl without knowing. It was windy, so communication was hard to hear...especially with our aero helmet covering our ears.

Somewhere along the line we dropped the 4th guy. I don't think he was feeling good, and he must have turned around on his own at around mile 8. I didn't know he was gone until the turn around.

Either way, we're doing very well...averaging well over 25 mph for the first half which is slightly with the wind. We make the turn around into the wind and we have to start adjusting our pace. I felt strong enough to power through the wind, but our girl was having trouble...so I decided to come off the front and let the other guy pull to hopefully keep our pace more even.

Naturally, he tones the pace down to make sure we don't drop her, but maybe a tad too much. She gives a yell to slightly pick up the pace, and as we accelerated slightly, she touched my back wheel and went down. I didn't feel the touch, just heard the crash. My heart sank as I looked back. Thank God she fell in a muddy/dirt area and wasn't hurt too bad. Part of her shorts ripped around the thigh, some small scraped on her knee and forearm, but not too bad considering. More muddy than anything.

Like a real trooper, she popped back up and was trying to get her chain back on before we could get back to her. We wanted her to take a minute to rest, but she insisted we go on while she felt ok and the adrenaline was pumping.

So I assume we would just cruise back, and I went to the back since I figured she may be wary off following my wheel again. But she insisted on racing and I jumped back up front to rotate with the other guy and it was like she never went down at all.

Crossed in a little over 1:04...and had she not gone down...we would have likely been in the 1:02 range.
What would you do differently?:

Not have our girl crash. Thank God she was okay. It was her birthday too.

But otherwise I had lots of fun...definately would do it again
Post race
Warm down:

Just showered and went to the awards announcement. We took 2nd in mixed. Also scored a free box of (24 packs) gels as a door prize. Actually...they had so much stuff they were just giving it away to anyone who raised their hand first.

Event comments:

Race was well put on. Lots of free prizes for everyone afterwards as well.
