Swim
Comments: My swim was horrible. I have virtually zero experience in open water swimming and it shows. 5 minutes into the race I was having a hard time catching my breath as the waves were rolling in. Since I can only breath on one side, I was catching the waves going out. I was about 30 seconds away from quiting and getting a ride on the boat. I'm glad I didn't. I just continued until I was able to catch my breath at the half way point. The second half I crushed, as if I was in the pool. If I could swim the first half like the second half, I would be in around 32 minutes, which would be awesome. What would you do differently?: Practice bi-lateral breathing and practice open water swimming. Living in Fargo, it is very tough to get open water swimming in. The nearest lake is a 30 minute drive. Transition 1
Comments: I was feeling sorry for myself for the pathetic swim. This took way too much time in transition. What would you do differently?: Quit feeling sorry for myself, forget what just happened and get moving. Bike
Comments: This portion went well. My first race with the new tri bike. I was very happy with how well this went with very minimal training on the bike this spring. What would you do differently?: More saddle time during training. Transition 2
Comments: Just about a perfect transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: My legs were heavy. My PR marathon race from 3 weeks ago was showing its ugly head during the run segment. Considering this, it was a good run leg. What would you do differently?: Nothing Post race
Warm down: Walked around cheering other racers while drinking and eating. What limited your ability to perform faster: Open water experience and marathon dead legs. Considering this was not an 'A' race, the race went okay ignoring the swim leg. The marathon was only 3 weeks ago and my 'A' race is DL in August. I know what to do to get better for that race. Event comments: This was a well organized race. It is top notch. Last updated: 2011-06-15 12:00 AM

Woke up at 430 in order to eat my traditional pre-race waffles. Stayed at my parents house for the weekend since the race is at the beach I grew up on.
This race had many more people than I'm used to at a triathlon so setting up the transition area took a lot longer than I'm used. Plus the distance from the transition area to the parking lot was longer than I'm used to. I was able to get in a 10 minute run with some strides in.
