Pre-race routine:

Breakfast consisted of 1 cup of coffee, 1/2 cup of oatmeal and 1 orange. Ate breakfast at home prior to driving to Canton.
Event warmup:

Didn't do any warm up. One key mistake. Should have gotten in the water and swam a little bit to get use to the water and to get use to open water swimming.
Swim
  • 16m 15s
  • 500 yards
  • 03m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

Bad experience for my first open water swim. As soon as I got into the water for some reason I freaked out. Really had trouble navigating with my head under the water and couldn't get my stroke and breathing down. Ended up swimming the entire course with my head out of the water which made my feet hang down creating tons of drag. Very slow swim. Not good at all for my first open water swim experience. Ended up coming out of the water very tired and winded.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get more experience swimming in open water among other swimmers. When I get in water need to relax and do exactly what I do in the pool.
Transition 1
  • 02m 46s
Comments:

T1 went a bit slow because I was so winded from swim. T1 definetly could have been faster.
What would you do differently?:

May try attaching bike shoes to bike next time and saving myself from putting on shoes beforehand.
Bike
  • 44m 59s
  • 12 miles
  • 16.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a pretty good bike which made up for the crappy swim. Think I may have exerted myself too much on the bike and ended up paying for it during the run. Was able to pass a few people on the way out and even more people on the way back in. Really think I had a pretty strong bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

Again this transition could have been faster also. Not too bad though.
What would you do differently?:

Get lock laces for my new running shoes.
Run
  • 30m 27s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Beginning of run was very difficult. Think I overexerted myself on bike so really had a tough time with the first mile. Ended up running the last 2 miles with someone who I met during the run. Had it not been for this gentelman running with me my run time probably would have been horrible but he really pushed me to hang in there. Run ended up being ok.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Without a doubt the swim. Having a bad swim translated into a bad T1 and a bad start to the bike.

Event comments:

Very well run and well organized event. Plenty of friendly volunteers. Very enjoyable bike and run course. Swim course probably would have even been enjoyable if it had gone better for me. All courses were very well marked. All swim waves started prompt and on time. Will definetly come back next year and do this tri again but will conquer my fear of the open water swim and do better next time!
