Age Group Rank = 8/24
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and packed up the hotel.
Event warmup:

This was a pool swim starting at 7. My start time wasn't until 9. I sat around lounging and cheering for racers. Too full from diner to eat anything.
Swim
  • 10h 14m
  • 437 yards
  • 2h 20m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

Great volunteers flipping numbers.
What would you do differently?:

I would trust myself and push harder. I took it way too easy.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

I was happy with my transition time. I had plenty of strength left from the swim so I went pretty quickly into transition.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to bike without socks. They are a time killer.
Bike
  • 44m 23s
  • 14 miles
  • 18.93 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed myself pretty well out there. Was going to try to hold a 20 MPH average but the hills were more than I remembered. Still felt pretty good and managed to keep everyone from passing me.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder going up the long hill. I slowed down a lot.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Long run around transition. Bike dismount was in the front and entered in the back of transition. Ran in racked my bike threw on the shoes (new laces worked great) and grabbed a quick sip of gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

Get out of biking shoes at the beginning of the transition run. I could go a lot quicker without biking shoes on.
Run
  • 23m 55s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good but hot. Kept a good pace for myself and had some left at the finish for the last hill of the day. Was going to not drink anything so I could keep a good pace. Actually grabbed water twice. More water went on my head than in my mouth. Needed it too cool myself.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It was a good run.
Post race
Warm down:

Gatorade and some oranges. Talked with my parent's and my wife. Then we sat around and cheered other finishers. There weren't many people left out on the course. With a start time of 9, I was close to the end of the people going out there.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to learn to swim. Other than that it was a good day for me.

Event comments:

This is by far one of my favorite races. The organizers are just great to work with. Lots of fun out there with both the volunteers and racers. The only bad thing is they ran out of pizza. The last 10 or so finishers didn't have an option. Still the organizers were surprised how quickly the pizza disappeared. It is hard to manage food and they had plenty of everything else.

Course: Shady grass trail going around the pool area. This leads to a gravel down hill road still in the shade. After about .5 miles of grass and gravel you are dumped out onto the hot pavement without shade. Then it is a hilly course but the hills aren't too bad.
