Swim
Comments: I tried to find a hole in the pack of about 100 women prior to the start on the center outside. Needless to say that closed quickly at the start. I knew there would be some bumping for the first 200, but that didn't bother me. I just weaved in and out until I found a place where I could get into a rhythm. My sighting was good and I quickly found open swim water. I can breathe on both sides pretty easily so when we rounded the bouys I switcehd for better sighting. All went really well until last 300yds when I caught up to the slow swimmers from previous waves. They were obviously tired and swimming crooked. I am sorry to the woman I literally swam over top of when she ducked in front of me. That was the toughest part to navigate What would you do differently?: Honestly, probably nothing. This was my first open water swim and my time was the same as the pool. On the off season I'll see about increasing speed, but I was very happy with this swim pace at this distance. I expected 25min and was well under Transition 1
Comments: This was my slowest T1 to date, but the run from the swim was pretty long. This was also my first time changing into bike shoes and I had to use water to clean my feet. Slippery hill out of transition, so I just walked the bike up it What would you do differently?: I could hurry a bit more, but overall fairly pleased Bike
Comments: This was the longest bike course I have raced to date and I knew it would be challenging. Also my first race with clip in shoes. Narrow entry to bike mount and 20 girls trying to get through. I get on and clip in left foot and start when another girl literally stops in front of me to mount....I almost crash but somehow manage to unclip and catch myself...oh well it will happen in bigger races. Only other glitch was somehow my magnet got bumped and I couldn't get a read on odometer. Had no idea how fast I was going, but just enjoyed the ride. Played cat and mouse with a couple other girls...passed tons of people on the uphills and generally felt really good. Put in a last spurt of effort at finish to pass a girl in my AG on a super nice bike...but she blew by me in the run :) What would you do differently?: More practice, but very happy wwith my time...I thought 1:10 so again was happy Transition 2
Comments: Again a bit slower here than I am used to, but I went to the wrong side of my rack....no excuse! Had to change shoes for first time and fumbled a bit, but basically it was fine. What would you do differently?: Just practice being more efficient Run
Comments: The run is my real weakness and since this was the longest race (by far) I have done to date I knew this could be difficult for me. I have really been working on longer distances lately in prep for my OLY in Oct. That training helped tremendously. I knew I would not be fast, but I wanted to feel good about my run. I was surprised how good my legs felt after the long bike so I just took it slow the first mile. I passed a ton of people here, but knew the hills were coming. I had planned on walking the big hills (didn't know you had to do it twice). I could have pushed a bit more on the run, but I felt great at the finish and was happy to have a good overall race at this distance. What would you do differently?: I could push more....too much left in the tank, but I can work on that next year Post race
Warm down: Walked around with my family. Ate some food and had some water. This was an amazing experience...the entire race was truly top notch. I can't wait to do it again next year. Event comments: Thank yo to all the volunteers....this was an excelelent race and so well organized for so many competitors Last updated: 2011-06-25 12:00 AM

Woke at 4 ate a yogurt and drove to Columbia about 40 min away. Ate a PB&J whole wheat bagel about 2 hrs before start. I really like racking bike the night before when possible...one less thing to do on race day. Set up my transistion and covered with a towel as an after thought...good thing because it poured before the start and race was delayed about 20 min. Other than that just walked around and took it all in. This is a huge race and very well organized.
No real warm up...walked to swim start, last minute potty break. You tread water for about 2 min before the start.
