Swim
Comments: I am a back of the pack swimmer. Brand new to this sport and brand brand new to swimming. After the San Diego Marathon in late june, I just wanted to do something different. So here I am. 8 weeks of drills and a TI book and I can cover 1500M. The swim took 2 min longer than I expected. My guess is that time was spent going side to side... What would you do differently?: Just keep working. Cant have much in the way of expectations at this point in my tri life. Many of yall have spent years learning how to swim. I shouldn't expect anything else. Transition 1
Comments: Not sure on T1 b/c I didnt get a time. I think that it got tacked on to the bike. But t2 was 3min so lets say this one was too. I have been 1:00 to 1:30 in my two sprints. It was disappointing that it took so long but I cant think of what I could have done to move much faster. What would you do differently?: dunno. Bike
Comments: This is about all I am capable of at the moment. The time was within a minute of where my 25Mi TT was in practice. I really am driven to work on the bike. I feel like getting faster here will really move me up. What would you do differently?: nothing. This is what I was capable of right now. Transition 2
Comments: Given the terrain in transition I opted to keep the shoes on and unclip. Slowed my run to the rack but kept my feet from getting stickers and mud on them. What would you do differently?: shoes on and then get everyting else situated on the run. My T2 was: Socks, shoes on Hat on Garmin from bike to wrist Race belt on gels in pocket Go! Better would be shoes and socks on, put everthing else in my hat and start running. gels, garmin, race belt and hat on while running. Need to practice it but I bet it saves 45 sec. Run
Comments: This got tough. But this was a decent pace for me. I ran a stand alone 10k in just under 50 min a couple of weeks ago so to only give up a minute or two felt pretty good. I actually walked a couple of aid stations. I've never done that before. Pretty refreshing. Really felt ready to go after the short break and it didn't seem to hurt my overall time much. I like multi-loop segments. In this case I was able to case out where I wanted to kick while running the first lap to make sure that I was gonna be ready to collapse as I crosse the finish. Mission accomplished. Post race
Warm down: Water and a chair in the shade till my HR was under control. Then food. Then the best shower that I have had in a long time. Then the hotel breakfast buffet. What limited your ability to perform faster: Could have done T2 better. Could have gotten to bike checkin earlier and gotten a better spot. Could have gotten to T setup earlier and walked through the transitions ahead of time. But I dont think that I could have SBR better given my fitness. My goal was under 3 hrs and I came in at 2:56. The swim took a little longer, the transitions took a little longer and the run was faster than I had predicted. I think that I got a little goopy headed towards the end of the race. Muddy thinking from the strain. The T's need to be automatic cuz in the longer races my thinking gets cloudy. Event comments: I really like Austin. And there are some FAST folks in austin. Nothing like cranking out what I feel like is a good time and ending up well into the bottom half of my AG. Ill be back next year for sure. Last updated: 2011-06-25 12:00 AM

This as my first out of town race and was a mid training checkup for my goal of Austin 70.3 in October.
We always go to sushi before long races. Found a nice place. I slept well till about 4am. Then I just dozed and tried to visualize success in the race and walk through the transitions in detail. Nothing like watching myself race to put me back to sleep.
Alarm at 530. Coffee and balance bar. Lost some time somewhere b/c by the time I got down to transition I only had 15 minutes. The transition area for this race was a mess because of the drought. Grass was long gone. Dirt, dust and stickers. Most of us ran to bike mount with our shoes on.
Terri came down to see me off. I was nervous. This was by far the longest swim I had done in open water. I had two goals: Get out of the water. Come in under 3 hrs.
