Swim
Comments: This was a really comfortable, easy swim for me. I deliberately tried to take this easy and not push it since this was my first Olympic distance and I did not want my transition or bike start to suffer from pushing too hard in the swim. This was also my first race in a wetsuit at any distance, though I had practiced a few days before in a much colder Lake Michigan. I went off course a couple of times, especially swimming straight into the blinding rising sun on the final leg of the triangle. I still turned in a time that I am happy with. What would you do differently?: Maybe worn darker goggles, but I doubt that would have helped with staring right into the sun. Transition 1
Comments: I took my time here to make sure I had everything (forgot my sunglasses at my last tri in T1). Took longer than expected to get my wetsuit unzipped, but first time doing it under race conditions/pressure so live and learn. What would you do differently?: More practice unzipping wetsuit? Bike
Comments: Overall I felt good, and this was a fast pace for me (~19mph average). It was frustrating to be passed by so many people, but such is the lot of the strong swimmer and mediocre biker. I took a couple of left turns too fast/wide and hit the gravel once, but stayed upright. What would you do differently?: Need to work on my cornering through left turns! Also eat more gels I think. Transition 2
Comments: This felt like a fast transition, I don't feel like I wasted any time, so I'm not sure how two minutes went by. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Run faster out of transition? Run
Comments: This was a fast pace for me and a tough effort. I really don't think I could have gone any faster. Course felt/looked longer than it was because of a couple of out, turn around and come back parts. Water was every 2 miles or so. What would you do differently?: Should have brought my own water bottle/water belt because I wanted to drink more often than they had stations. They started out with water at miles 1 and 2, but then not again until after mile 4 I think, and then nothing until the finish. It was getting hot at this point and I probably didn't drink enough on the bike. Post race
Warm down: Walked, stretched, ate and drank. What limited your ability to perform faster: Uh, being a slow biker and runner? Event comments: This was a good race and I felt good and had a good time. Weather was just about perfect. My only complaint, and it's a minor one that others probably wouldn't complain about, would be with the infrequent water stations on the run. Ate oatmeal and a Clif bar for breakfast, and drank a lot of water. Arrived early (~5am), set up my stuff for transition, and walked around a bit and drank coffee. Checked my bike out, aired up the tires.
Got in the water around 5:30 for a warm up swim. The lake was awesome--perfectly calm and 70 degrees. It was good for me mentally to get in the water before the start as it really calmed me down. I am a strong swimmer but this would be my first open water swim at this distance.
