Swim
Comments: I enjoyed swimming Lake Loveland far more than I anticipated! I felt that people thinned out immediately. I was swimming with people of all age groups and cap types so I had no idea what my pace was relatively, but I felt strong and controlled. I had no issues with sighting or breathing. I wore Aqua Sphere Lady Kaiman Goggles and they were amazing. What would you do differently?: I probably should have amped it up a little, especially near the end. I finished feeling like I could have given it a little more. I'm very happy I went with the wetsuit. Transition 1
Comments: Getting the wetsuit off was a challenge I hadn't practiced. It bunched at the heals and I had a heck of a time getting it off. Then I forgot my hydration pack (I prefer this on my bike over a bottle) so I had to backtrack a bit to get that...all this prevented a faster transition time. Either way, I'm not too concerned. What would you do differently?: Practice with the wetsuit removal...and also go over all the necessary items and helpful placement for each transition so I don't forget anything. Bike
Comments: I felt that I trained well for the bike segment, but once I got here I couldn't help but feel like I should have done more. My legs burned within the first 10 miles, and I felt like the majority of the ride was uphill. This was not a good feeling. However, the ride was insanely beautiful. It was early enough that the mist from the clouds filled the valleys between the hills, and Horsetooth lake was stunning. I really loved getting to see it all, which made the hard parts more bearable! I dropped significantly in rank in the bike segment...got passed a lot. But, I also did pass a few people, and at the end I maintained pretty well. I was definitely ready to get off that saddle. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty fast, much faster than T1. Had my act together, and rehearsed it in my head on the way in so I was ready! What would you do differently?: Practice more, get in and get out! Run
Comments: I felt pretty lame going into the run...I knew I was going pretty slow. I didn't record my splits, but I'm sure my first mile was a real drag. Luckily I found another woman around my pace who really helped me through the final half, which was amazing. What would you do differently?: More brick workouts...with longer running distances next time. I did my share of bricks, but they were never longer than 2 miles of running at once. I would have seen the benefit of more bike + long run training. However, I still beat my most recent 10k time by 1 minute, which I felt was impressive for a triathlon time! Post race
Warm down: I walked around, drank gatorade, and got my breath back. Then I ate more than I needed, but the brownies at breakfast were an incredible reward! :-) What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training for hills on the bike course...this was my greatest downfall. Event comments: Would recommend this one. A nice introduction to Olympic triathlons, with a good mix of amateurs and elites. I had a great time! Last updated: 2011-06-27 12:00 AM

Loveland Lake to Lake Triathlon
60F / 16C
Overcast
Overall Rank = 571/714
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 27/38
This was my first olympic triathlon, but I stuck with my pre-sprint and pre-5k and 10k routines. I drank a good deal of water each day during the week leading up to the race, and the night before I consumed a light meal of pasta (about 1 c) and granola with milk). For breakfast (about 2 hours before the race began, I had a glass of water with Emergen-C (passion-fruit flavor!), a wheat English muffin with a thin spread of almond butter and a small banana. On the drive up, I drank a bottle of water mixed with Gatorade.
Before the event and after I got everything set up in my transition area, I was able to jump into the lake and swim a few laps in my wetsuit (sleeveless). I ate one Clif Shot Blok and felt great, warm and ready to start.
