Swim
Comments: First ever TRI. Got blown off course by the current a little and had to swim upstream to make it around the buoy. Hit the buoy rope and had to work myself back into the course. After that I got discombobulated a little and stopped swimming too often to sight. Finally got into a decent rhythm with about 100m left and passed a few people. I actually think a longer swim would've been better. What would you do differently?: Do a little more sighting practice and a bit more thinking about the direction of the current before hand and try to compensate a little better. I only did one OWS prep and that was ok but nothing could really prepare me for OWS with 25 other people. I think the experience alone will help. Transition 1
Comments: I did this slow on purpose since it was my first transition. Just wanted to get a feel for everything. What would you do differently?: Definitely jog instead of walk from water to bike. Bike
Comments: Enjoyed the bike and had scouted the terrain prior to the event. planned on saving some gears for the big hill but but ended up trying to shift and having no gears left about halfway up. Saw some people walking and thought about walking myself but kept grinding, quads on fire. Got to the top and thought I might hurl but I held it down and made it to the turnaround ok. Down the hill was great fun. My spedometer showed a 38.4 mph top speed going down and I remember getting passed!! (some people are amazing) Overall I probably pushed a little too hard here. I tried to slow it down with about a mile left thinking, to save some legs for the run but the damage was done. What would you do differently?: I didn't ride at all the week before the race and I think that cost me. I started out a little too fast and ran out of gears on the big hill. Tried eating some energy "goo" at about mile 5 and it made my stomach hurt a bit. Not sure if it helped or not. Next time I think I will skip the "goo". But overall I was pleased with myself. Transition 2
Comments: I'm a little surprised at how slow I was here. What would you do differently?: Maybe I could practice once or twice with my stuff just to get better at it. But this doesn't bother me. Run
Comments: Set out with a goal of completing the run without walking and did that. I also came in last in my age group but still pleased with myself. A couple times I tried to push myself to run fast but just didn't have any juice. Left every ounce on the course. What would you do differently?: This is the area that I think I can make the most progress. Just need to run more often and more regularly. Post race
Warm down: Walked around talking to people and drinking a lot of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mostly time to train and my weight. I had a good workout plan and stuck to it for most of January - June. This got me fit enough to be able to finish each discipline. But I had no diet plan at all. Event comments: I enjoyed this race thoroughly and my only complaint was the swim was shortened a week before the event from 650m to 400m. I'd been training for 650 since January and was disappointed at not getting the chance to see how I'd do. Other than that everything was great. Last updated: 2011-06-27 12:00 AM
