Swim
Comments: The race started at 7 – My swim time was 7:02:30. I’d never done a pool swim before. They seed you based on your predicted 100yd time. I put in 1:42 but somehow got seeded up with people in the 1:30’s. No idea why. Anyway, you jump in the pool after the person in front of you pushes off the wall, and then you go 10 secs apart. Swim up on one side, down on the other, swim under the lane line and repeat for 400 m. I got passed really early by a really fast guy who was 2 or 3 swimmers back, and caught a draft off of him for a little while, but then he was gone. Then I got passed by the girl behind me with 150 m to go, so I drafted off her until the end. Getting out was a challenge because the walls are so high, so I sort of rolled completely ungracefully out of the pool. Turns out a lot of people got out that way too. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I had a great swim - it's so much easier when you don't have to worry about navigation. Transition 1
Comments: Still don't mount with my shoes on my bike, but in this case it was a good thing because of the hill out of transition - I would never have gotten my feet in my shoes fast enough. Bike
Comments: Bike was great – the new race wheels are awesome – very smooth! I passed a lot of people starting out, and only got passed by 3 guys (one of which I passed on the turn around because of the hills), and of course got BLOWN by the #2 and 3 overall women. I stayed in aero the whole time – except when I stood up to power up the hills. What would you do differently?: I felt like I gave it all I had. Transition 2
Comments: good except that I struggled to get my funning shoes on (never happened before) and forgot to take off my helmet/glasses. What would you do differently?: Be less flaky Run
Comments: Smoked the run! I felt like my legs didn’t move, especially running up those STEPS out of transition, but I guess they kicked in better than I thought. Little hill out of transition, and then down and flat until the last ¼ mile which was a never-ending and pretty steep hill. It always amazes me when I see that I can do sub-8's at the end of the sprint tri since I've never been able to run that fast in a stand alone 5K. Post race
Warm down: It was a blast – very cool to have people you know cheering you on, Dennis and the boys were at the finish line (granted, they got there 15 mins or so AFTER I’d finished, but still), and then they opened up the pool to the kids during the post-race festivities. My toes didn’t cramp, and my legs actually feel pretty good today. Event comments: Great race, well organized, will do it again next year if I can! Last updated: 2011-06-28 12:00 AM

Alarm went off at 4:30, left the house at 4:55. There were a lot of people already at the race, even though we got there at 5:15. We set up, warmed up on the bike (which was a good thing because my bike was in the wrong gear to go up the huge hill out of transition), the run, and then went to swim. It’s never good that your first time swimming in a 50M pool is for your triathlon swim warmup, but at least I got to warm up.
