Swim
Comments: Wasn't as cold as I expected so that was cool. I was running out of time and having troubles getting my fullsuit on since it was only the second time i've tried it...I rented the suit... so luckily I found Randy and Zach with a min to start and they helped pull on the sleaves for me and zipped me up. What would you do differently?: Get the wetsuit on eariler and swim just a bit harder, I was wasn't going too hard because it was my first time at this distance, yet I somehow went 2min faster than last year at the same swim distance, woo hoo for masters swim. Transition 1
Comments: Got the top of the wetsuit off pretty easy but the bottom half was difficult. Ground was muddy so I took a sec to whipe my feet on my T towel before putting them in the bike shoes. I need to learn how to do the running bike mount for Tri's in the future. I also took a sec to whipe off my shades because it had rained while I was in the water What would you do differently?: Take the wetsuit off faster and do a running mount on the bike with shoes already clipped in. Bike
Comments: The course was wet because it had rained and was currently raining during most of the ride. So I was taking corners and turns easy so not to wipe out. Another really bad this is the course wasn't closed to traffic! usually the cars were pretty good about it, but once I was coming up on a pack of 3 cars because the one car "grandma and grandpa" weren't going to pass this one biker, They also didn't leave much room for me to get by either, I had about 3-6 inches to my left before I'd hit them and 3-6 inches on the right before I fell off the road. Randy also had troubles with a car that was dragging a boat and he had even less room than me. Other than that, the water bottle hand off went well and it was my first so I thought it was pretty cool. I also had to pee starting at mile 25 and tried to do it a few times but failed, I finally peed on the bike at mile 30 when I hit a stright away, washed off with some water. Yet I kind of lost focus on biking after mile 25 because I was contemplating the fact of peeing on my bike, so it might have slowed me down a bit. My bike comp said the race was 31.18 miles I believe and that I was rocking 18mph pace, which i'm happy about since I was only doing 17something for sprints last year. What would you do differently?: Close the course to traffic, which would be hard because it was 2 way traffic in only 2 lanes. I need to rock some hills more so they don't seem so bad when I ride them in a race. Transition 2
Comments: I got out of my shoes better, but after I get out of them I had a little problem getting my feet on top of them but finally worked it out. The hop off went well but I need to slow down more before I hop off, one shoe hit the ground after I jumped off which always happens but I didn't have a good grip on the bike and almost dropped it. I HAD THE FASTEST T2 OUT OF ANYONE!!!! I was pretty ampted about that, but it didn't feel that fast. I didn't put on socks because I refuse to for anything sorter than a Half. Feet were muddy so I whiped them on the Towel again before putting on the shoes. Ran out with hat on and number being put on in the process. What would you do differently?: Go Faster!!! I only got out of T2 1 sec faster than the dude who came in 2nd overall for T2. I was happy to have the fastest T2 time, but I know I can go faster. Run
Comments: So the whole run I thought it was a 6.2 mile run and I was going for 50min, but after I passed mile 6 I remembered it was 6.5. The first mile was 8:30 and after that I kept 8:15's. I walked the aid stations and took on Cytomax and sucked on an orange slice to keep hydrated. I've never done a race of this distance so I was playing it a bit safe on the run but I'm happy with my performance and ablitly to stay hydrated. I was gonna stop and pee on the run but I peed on the bike and only had 2 miles left in the run so I sucked it up and finished. What would you do differently?: I need to run more, I've been slacking there with only doing the 5K course around my living area, which is a good course and helped with hills, but I need to do track workouts and work on getting my HR up and sucking it up when it starts to hurt. Post race
Warm down: None What limited your ability to perform faster: The lack of distance training hurt my performance, I've only done one other 30 mile bike before this and it was on my crappy indoor trainer. I haven't run 6.5 miles for a damn long time, I did that hilly 5K course twice, one time making it 10K, and another flat 6 mile run at an 8:30 pace. So considering that I think I raced pretty well and broke 3 hours which is what I wanted to do, and I sprinted at the finish to get that time. Now I really need to get distances up because I have...checking the calender... 40 days till Mooseman Half. I also need to work on Mental Focus, I'm used to short races so on longer stuff I sort of lose focus, not really speed, I'll just zone out. Event comments: Aid stations where stocked, only 2 USAT officals so there was drafting going on, Course was not closed so even on the run I would have to move to one side of the road or the other to get around cars who were trying to dodge bikers and runners while on the home strech of the run and bike. We had planned on sleeping on picnic tables near the race site, but when we got back from dinner that part was closed off, so we camped with tents pretty close by. woke up at 5:45am with go time at 8:30. munched on a plain bagel through out the morning. I had to set up my bike in the AM because I didn't have a chance to in the PM.
no swim warm up and no bike warm up, no time... I got a 2min jog in right before the pre race meeting.
