Pre-race routine:

So you know that saying "don't try anything on race day that you haven't tried in training" yeah, I kind of ignored that one today. Breakfast consisted of 1 and 1/2 banana's and a blueberry muffin with gatorady water.
Event warmup:

did a 2 mile bike warm up first, then maybe 2 min run warm up, decided to skip the swim warm up...you'll understand why in a min.
Swim
  • 16m 25s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 11s / 100 meters
Comments:

Two swims, both 375M, maybe, you start with the swim and end with the swim.
1st swim: 6:48 90/325 overall
2nd swim: 9:37 169/325 overall

WOW was that water rough...here's an idea for you. Coast Guard went to set out the Buoy's, they set 3 of them, within 3min of dropping one in the water...it would wash up on shore!! So god bless the lifeguards who had to swim the buoy out and hold on to it while trying to stay in one place. On the second swim they ditched the buoys and held up their red lifesavers and buoys.

First swim I had to start about 75 Meters to the right of the buoy because the current was so strong. I lined up almost perfectly and then got to the second buoy sooo fast because of the current, but it was rough swimming back to shore, the waves were huge but I couldn't seem to catch one.
Second swim was pretty burtal. You had to run from t-area past the finish line and down to the start swim, about 300M. The waves got bigger and your tired from the run, bike, run it was hard to get out to the lifeguards. My arms were pretty tired by the time I got out there too. What was worse was as I was trying to swim in, I couldn't catch a wave so I drifted about 150yards to the right of the finish line, so I had a nice beach run before the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I was just trying to survive, especially on the second one.

Comments:

ok here's the thing. They didn't count T-times. All t-times were added onto the run. You get out of the water and run over a mat, then next mat isn't till you get on the bike, then again when you start the swim.

Comments:

YEAH FOR NEWLY PAVED ROADS!! Ok so the course says 12.4, but my bike says 11.3 and that I averaged 19.6...which is more beliveable, but I like the race's speed better. Basic bike ride, 3 miles out and back, do that twice. slight headwind on the way back.

I tried a running mount with my bike...for the first time, never practiced! It went pretty damn well I think. I used rubberbands and hooked my left foot to the back wheel and kept it close to the ground. I couldn't figure what to hook my right shoe onto so I put the rubberband around the box behind the seat that holds my "I hope I don't Flat" gear. So I get a running start and do this awkard leap to where I put my left foot onto the shoe and try and supperman streach my right leg over. I had to unhook the right rubber band before anything so I didn't rip that bag off, the left one came off as soon as I started peddling. Got up to speed and slid one foot in, got back up to speed and did the other, SUCESS!!!(i can't spell) I was passed by 2 dudes in my age group on the bike, I caught one on the run though. I was also Chicked once!

DAMN!! this is my best bike leg in a race thus far, but I still managed to come out 14th out of 15 in my age group. damn.

Woo Hoo for bike mount, boo for age group place in the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not much

Comments:

1st run: 13:10 ...which includes swim to run T-time, which was 1:30 AND run to bike T-time which was pretty fast. 89/325 overall
2nd run: 12:46...which includes bike to run T-time, not too long since I did a flying dismount, AND run to swim T-time. 55/325 overall

First run wasn't too bad, cramped in the sides a bit. I was already out of breath starting the run because the swim was killer! Drinking was hard because the water was in styrofoam cups so I'd have to stop and walk to drink. 2 guys in my AG passed me pretty much right off the bat. I ran with a group of 4 dudes that kept me at a decent pace.

Second run was mucho better. I caught that one guy who passed me on the bike and talked to him for a bit. I don't think he finished because when I said "you pumped about that second swim" his responce was "fuck that" and he was flying on the bike, so I think I have the right dude. I think I run pretty well off the bike, not to sure why. I slowed on the last stright away of the run so I could catch my breath since I had to go swimming again.
Post race
Warm down:

a what? crap I knew I forgot something!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

stupid waves.

Event comments:

The race was delayed 15min due to the buoy situation. I never thought I'd say this but the surf was rougher this year than last. But I love the format of the race and will continute to do it, hopefully the swim will get easier.
