Swim
Comments: No problems. Nothing of note. Minimal chop, still plenty of space. Even splits. Transition 1
Comments: Very dizzy coming out of water. I had to sit for a few minutes just to let my head clear. Bike
Comments: Wow, what a desolate area. But at least there wasn't any real traffic to contend with. It got pretty hot during the day, and I don't know if I was drinking enough. My pace and HR dropped throughout the ride, and I was plenty glad to be done. Transition 2
Comments: I knew I wasn't that great coming off the bike, so I sat down for a good ten minutes with my shoes off and ice in my hat, sipping Gatorade. Then I took my time getting changed, and headed out. Run
Comments: The run was 3x out and back, and I don't know if I could have finished otherwise. I couldn't run for more than a few minutes at a time; my quads were threatening to quit, and I was thoroughly demoralized at the end of the first loop. I had hoped to finish with a 5 hour marathon, and the first loop had taken me just about 2:15? Shit, no way. But I pressed on, and as I ran, I kept rechecking the numbers, and I started to realize that as long as I could hold my pace, I could finish before midnight. So that's what I did. Post race
Warm down: No idea. I was on another planet at the time. I walked around, got some soup, then my brother and sister-in-law helped pack my things up and I went back to the hotel. I didn't feel that bad after the race; as I'd heard, the day after was far worse. But it was manageable. What limited your ability to perform faster: Hydration on the bike. Event comments: I had a great time at this race and plan on racing it again. The course was safe (if a little monotonous), the people were wonderful, and there were plenty of amenities. I slept like absolute shit, waking up every hour or so, looking at the clock, then lying back down. 3:00 AM rolled around, my phone started beeping. I hit "dismiss" almost as soon as it started, reached over, and ate my two bagels with peanut butter and two hard-boiled eggs, and washed it down with a quart of Gatorade. I slept a little bit after that, but still woke up for the second alarm at 5:00.
I loaded up the car and took off. Got to the school, dropped my T2 and run special needs bags, and waited for the shuttle. I drank my Gatorade primer on the bus and tried not to feel nauseous. Once we got to the water, I prepped my things, then walked around a bit. I went for a quick jog just to try and burn off some nerves, but it was pretty useless. At least the porta-potties were relatively clean.
I didn't bother with much warmup. I got in the water about 10 minutes before the start and got comfortable. There was plenty of space, so I found a spot well clear of anybody else a little back from the start. I waited until 5 seconds before the horn, and started swimming.
