Pre-race routine:

Up @ 3:30. Make/eat bkfst, load up bikes, gear, hubby, jackie, becky and me in becky's truck. Plenty of time to set up once we got there, have coffee, etc. Thanks to the guy who bought my coffee...I thought the starbucks table in the hotel was free, only saw the $3/cup sign after I'd poured and had no cash on me.

Waking BG 136
3 hrs aft bkfst BG 156

Pre swim BG 215

Comments:

Water off the pier was about 3 ft deep, so sort of waded out after jumping in. Started outside right, and plan was to stay there, but I wound up veering left so was back in close to the buoys and all the peeps. Lots of contact, but nothing major. Goggles fogged up quite a bit, so hard to make out much, but was able to find the next buoy most of the time. After the 2nd turn, wound up veering too far right and heard someone in a boat yelling "go left". Not sure if they were talking to me, but I definitely needed to go left. Swim out was a mud pit. Stood up kinda early, and then dolphin dived a few times. Felt a hand on my back as we were climbing out, and it was becky :)
What would you do differently?:

Put some anti fog stuff on my goggles. Eliminate the dead stops to get my bearings.
Transition 1

Comments:

Ran up the longish hill to T1. First ran to the wrong level, but that didn't cost me too much time. Was moving pretty well, bike shoes/helmet on, tested bg and went to bolus. Where is my pump? *&^%!!! I left it at the table down at swim out! Took off bike shoes/helmet, talked to an official, and ran in my sock feet back down to swim out to get my pump. Then back up the hill again. Had tears stinging my eyes at this point...so mad/sad/frustrated you name it.

BG 224, bolused 0.4 units
What would you do differently?:

Not forget to pick up my pump at the swim out table.

Comments:

For the first part of the ride, I was really upset over the T1 happenings. When I got there after retrieving my pump, my bike was the ONLY one left on that level in T1. I was fighting the DFL thoughts for quite a while on the ride. Kept looking for other OLY race #'s and didn't see any until I saw folks heading back as I got out on the OLY portion of the course. Sincerely thought about just packing it in, and then remembered why I'm doing all this, my BT mentor group friends, my family waiting at the finish line, and what a spectacular day it was weather wise. At times it did turn into more of a cruise through the countryside for me as I was just never in it mentally. Finally saw/passed a few other OLY peeps, and headed for home.
What would you do differently?:

Mentally let go of whatever has already happened and focus on the rest of the race.
Transition 2
  • 04m 26s
Comments:

This was an OK transition for me.
What would you do differently?:

Move faster.
Run
  • 1h 02m 42s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

Walked the first big uphill, and then got going. Legs felt good, and breathing was fine. Again, just not really mentally all there, so turned it into a social/take in the scenery thing at times. Caught up w/ Becky early on, and walked with her a bit. Then started to run again. Ran w/ a nice gal around mile 3 to 4 and we chatted and encouraged each other for a while. Never really felt like I pushed it...and walked some when I felt like it esp. on the uphills.
What would you do differently?:

At that stage, in this race, I don't know that I would do much different because at least I enjoyed this part. But for future, I hope to push it more and run more to my physical potential.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate 1/2 mini bagel and bottle of water and a few swigs of gatorade. Ending BG 75.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My mind. Subtract the T1 screwup and I would have been 9/14 instead of 11/14 in AG. Subtract the mental meltdown and have a very good day physically, and maybe 8/14. So, lets see, I would have gone from mid/back of pack to hmmm...mid/back of pack. I need to remember that this is a personal journey with no single destination, and not take one stupid setback so seriously.

Event comments:

This race was well done, and the volunteers were awesome! It was different than others I've done...more geared to the pro's, corporate sponsors, etc., which is understandable. But that also took a little away from the fun vibe that I get from most tri's. Great job by the RD on dealing with the last minute construction issues and marking the bad spots on the bike course.

Course: Nasty uphill right out of T1. Walked my bike up the steepest portion, and glad I did. Others were either doing that, or having a really hard time getting up it. Middle section was mostly rolling hills with some flatter sections. Road conditions were better than expected since they got the gravel section paved. Had a few bumps, bad pavement with drop offs here and there. The out and back loop with the hill that we did twice was a bit sadistic if you ask me.
