woke up 4:15, ate bagel and banana, coffee, drove to race

starting off, fast pace felt fairly comfortable, started to get hard at mile 3 so backed off some, started to hurt miles 4 and 5, felt better mile 6 which was downhill, had a good kick left at the end
What would you do differently?:

not much, maybe go harder miles 4 and 5, had quite a bit of kick left at the end, though wouldn't have made much difference in overall placement, next person in front in my age was ahead by 4 mins, unusual for me to place highest in the run of the 3 segments
