Swim
Comments: I tried to take it easy at the start, but still had to duck dive some waves. I was able to follow some feet for a while, but I lost my draft before the first turn. There was some congestion, but not much. I started hurting about half way and just tried to focus on swimming straight, reaching and getting air. Was hoping to catch some waves into shore, but that never really happened. Dolphin dived once I touched sand and it seemed like forever until I got out of the surf. Then there's the long run up the hill to transition. I think this swim is a bit long. I was 9:09 out of the water and there's no way I swam this slower than my IM pace of 2:00/100. I think I caught Monica by surprise and I heard someone counting out caps as I was running up the hill. I was 13th out of the water in the 10-year wave of 156. I just didn't know how many were in my AG. What would you do differently?: Given my limitations, I'm happy with this swim. I drafted, swam relatively straight and paced myself pretty well. It was tough at the end, but it's a race and it should feel hard. Transition 1
Comments: Guestimated time based on Garmin - transitions are lumped in with bike split in official results. Lame. What would you do differently?: I think this went well. Mount wasn't the greatest (not flying), but just wanted to make sure I got on the bike cleanly and not lose any time. Worked out fine. Bike
Comments: As soon as I got up to speed and into shoes, I realized I hadn't started my Garmin. Speed was fast heading south and I wasn't working too hard. turned around and realized why - wind out of the north. Got passed once - sometime on first loop. Mostly just passed people from earlier waves, but not many from my AG. At one point looked back and saw I was pulling three guys. Finally dropped them on second loop. Dismount went well (got off early to avoid the mess at the dismount line) and I ran barefoot into transition, not losing a shoe this year. What would you do differently?: Had HR pinned at 160 for most of the ride. About as much as I can do. Need to get a power meter. Transition 2
Comments: Couldn't find my rack for a while. Didn't take the time to scout out transition and walk path of travel in the morning. It cost me some time as I stood there, scanning the racks, looking for something familiar. Then, not realizing it at the time, I racked my bike on the wrong side (hopefully, my rackmates still had room). What would you do differently?: Make sure to scout out transition and identify my rack. I do this far too often, so not sure I can blame the flat for this - still had plenty of time. Run
Comments: Felt sluggish at the start, fiddling with Garmin and race belt. Grabbed a cup of water at the Run Out. Finally got Garmin turned on and started to pick up the pace. Didn't feel great, but wasn't completely miserable. Passed the mile markers and didn't really have any sense of urgency. Just felt slow. Got passed late on 2nd loop and couldn't match pace. Ended up finishing 9 seconds behind. What would you do differently?: Push harder! Post race
Warm down: Walked through the expo area. Drank water. Sat w/Monica while she had some pizza and waited for results to be posted. Chatted with other racers and watched some of the awards ceremony. What limited your ability to perform faster: Fitness, made some mistakes in transition. Didn't push hard enough on the run. Event comments: Fourth year in a row I have done this race, but first 3 were duathlon - triathlon is much more competitive! Much prefer starting in first wave. Course was very cluttered by the time I hit the bike and run. Band and beer garden post-race. Pizza from Pizza Port. Just grabbed some free FRS and water. This is a good local race. Just wish they would have 5 splits - never have tho. Not sure they ever will. Last updated: 2011-07-07 12:00 AM

I skipped the expo and planned to pay the extra $10 to get my race number, chip, cap, etc. on race morning. Got up at 4:00, loaded up and drove to Solana Beach. Parked in the train depot lot and walked to transition around 5:30.
I had been having trouble getting air in my new disc wheel, so I brought a spare wheel just in case there was a problem and asked a friend to help me when I got there. Sure enough, we blew the tube at around 100 psi and the 48mm valve stem on the spare tube I brought was too long to use on the disc. Fortunately, I was in one of the last waves and still had a couple of hours to mess with it. I walked back to the parking lot and grabbed the spare wheel and picked up my race packet on the way back. I also had to change out the brake pads back to cork for the carbon rim and by the time I finished, Monica was just getting to transition. I still had a good hour or so until my wave started. I grabbed my swim stuff and we headed over to the overlook to watch the swim and runners coming up the hill to T1.
Got in a good swim warmup in the surf.
