Swim
Comments: It is so much easier to sight a big sail boat than it is to sight off a little triangle bouy. I saw a hand-full of HUGE jelly fish and over 20 little ones. I was a little scared the entire swim...you'd think that would make me swim faster but it didn't. I also saw a big starfish in the water about 100yds off the beach. My buddies wife said if I concentrated on swimming more, and less on sight seeing, maybe I'd swim faster. HAHA! Point taken. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I swam as fast as I know how. Transition 1
Comments: First time putting socks and shoes on in T1. Other than that I was in and out quick. What would you do differently?: I need to buy different mt bike shoes for xterra races. Bike
Comments: I feel like I rocked the bike! I passed all but 5 of the fastest guys on the course. I don't feel like I could have gone much faster. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 2
Comments: In and out quickly. What would you do differently?: Nothing Run
Comments: This was a fun course! What would you do differently?: Run faster...keep my head in the game...my mind wandered quite a bit during this run. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, ate some free food, chatted with some of the other athletes. The guy that won was on the podium at the US national Xterra last year...There were some fast guys out there! What limited your ability to perform faster: My swimming. I'm pretty sure I have listed this on every race report since I started doing triathlons. Maybe it's time to do something about it. Event comments: I'm not sure I'll do this one again. Any race that has multiple loops should have a timing mat at the start of every loop to keep people honest; they did not. Drove up to Vashio Island the day before. Went for a swim in the bay, checked into the hostel and got the van ready for sleep. Quite a few other racers were camping near me so I talked to them while I got the bike tuned up and ready to race.
Woke up early so I could stop on the way to get coffee. This island is a ghost town on a Sunday morning...so no coffee for Jake. Got set up in transition early, drank my breakfast shake, and walked the first hill of the bike course. Swam about 150 yards prior to the swim.
