Swim
Comments: My first open water 2k without a wetsuit. Started at the back of the pack, swimmers constantly bumping into me, couldn't find my rhythm. Didn't enjoy the swim at all. What would you do differently?: Swim more, practice in open water. Transition 1
Comments: No wetsuit, took the time to get my socks on snickers on. I wasn't going for a fast transition. Bike
Comments: High gear single speed, way too hard for the course. Bad chain/cog alignment, the chain was skipping when standing or powering on the hills, I had to walk the hills. Settled on the idea that it was going to be a "long" ride but 70-75km into the ride I realized it was just not going to work. Decided to DNF after the bike leg, cruised/walked back to the transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. That was the only bike I had available, I wasn't there to "race". The course was really too difficult for a single speed and a very hot day. I should have perhaps go for a swim/run combo instead Transition 2
Run
Post race
Warm down: Cooled down in the lake :) No line-up for food, one of the perks of DNF... I guess What limited your ability to perform faster: I went as minimal as possible, no wetsuit, no gears, platform pedals, minimalist running shoes, no Garmin, only one bottle with Infinit. The swim turned out to be way more difficult then I expected and the hot day combined with a single speed bike on a hilly course proved to be a bit too much. I absolutely don't regret this day, it was an great learning experience. Being able to swim, bike, run without relaying on all the fancy technology is a great feeling. Event comments: Great event. I had my best and my worse Half Ironman here, I'll definitively come back. Last updated: 2011-07-14 12:00 AM
