Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:00 & had pancakes at the Denny's by my hotel. Loaded up and headed to the race site. Transition area was pretty small so I just picked a decent spot for my bike & gear and set up my area. Stretched & walked around.
Event warmup:

Just some stretching
Swim
  • 00m
  • 1500 meters
  • / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a clockwise swim and I breathe to my left. I also tend to drift to the left quite a bit so I had a bad feeling about this. I stayed in the main pack going toward the first turn and tried to keep someone on my left at all times to avoid drifting out. It didn't work and I found myself constantly having to correct my direction. This cost me a lot of time as I swam much farther than I should have.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better / more often
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Felt a little sluggish coming out of the water & kind of went through my routine a bit slowly.
Bike
  • 1h 28m 35s
  • 27.96 miles
  • 18.94 mile/hr
Comments:

I didn't set up my pedals beforehand and they were out of position when I got on the bike which made my whole mount sloppy. Got going & took a gel shot right away. I was going pretty well until the halfway point when the harder hills kicked in. They had a water hand off at one turn so I decided to take a bottle as practice. Slowed a bit much but at least I didn't crash during the process. After that it just seemed to be never ending hills.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more hills in training
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Again I was a little slow coming off the bike & went through my transition a bit slow.
Run
  • 50m 25s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Run starts with a short steep uphill to the top of a dam. My pace was pretty good starting out. I started getting some stomach cramps during miles 2 and 3 and slowed down considerably. After the turn I was able to pick my pace up a bit and finished pretty strong. It was a hard run & quite a few people were walking. Run support was great with water, gatorade, and ice towels.
What would you do differently?:

More running. I've had to limit my run training considerably due to achilles problems.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank lots of water & ate.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim sighting, hills, limited run training

Event comments:

This is a really challenging race & is good for racing with hills. A perfect tune up race for for me before Longhorn 70.3
