Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:15, at some toast with peanut butter and jelly, some applesauce, and two cups of coffee. Got the rest of the family up about 5:45 and drove downtown about 6. Milled around and found the scouting group for the 6:30 meeting time.

I was hoping for 81-85 minutes (about 9 min/mile give or take) and knew when I opened the door to get the paper that 81 wasn't going to happen and 85 was in jeopardy.
Event warmup:

Stood around, bounced a little, but otherwise didn't do much (it was pretty warm, and with over 3000 runners in the two races, I knew the first mile wouldn't be too quick and could serve as my warmup. Announcer said it was 75F at the start, and it got warmer before I was done.

Comments:

I'm glad to be done. I wasn't sure I'd be able to hold any kind of pace with my HR in the stratosphere, but somehow I did.

Difference between official time and my time was 36 seconds.

Tried to thank or acknowledge all the volunteers, police officers, and spectators who came out to support us.

They handed me a finisher medal just after the chute. Had a friend tell me I "looked good" (liar, I know I looked like crap). Heard a couple of people call my name, but I wasn't sure who, and there wasn't enough extra blood to go to my brain.
What would you do differently?:

Ummmm...could try to run at a lower HR...
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for a few minutes. Ate a muffin, yogurt, bottle of water, 2 pieces of orange, a small beer, a bottle of green tea, and another bottle of water.

Came home and took a shower.

My wife ran faster than her goal for the 4-mile race. My youngest two sons also ran the 4-mile.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat.

Event comments:

They bring in some top-flight runners for this race. It was amazing to see how fast the top finishers were.

Performance: Average
First mile was about 9:20, 2 miles in 18:30 or so. Unfortunately, my HR is hovering around 185. At 2 miles, the 4-mile runners turned around and the rest of us headed into the park for 2 laps of the park. First part of the lap was a major hill (up of course). I walked up the hill trying to keep my HR "down". (My HR was still close to 190 walking up the hill.) Ran again once the course flattened out (walked about 2-3 minutes). Around the park (flat) and through the neighborhood (mostly flat), then screaming down the hill to where the 2-miles turned around. Second loop went almost exactly like the first. After the second loop, we had 2 miles to the finish. I was around 29 minutes for 5K, 38 minutes at 4 miles, 47 minutes at 5 miles, and 57 minutes for 6 miles. I came by the 10K timer in 59:XX. I grabbed a water about mile 2.5 and dumped some on my head. At the next aid station, I drank a gatorade (walked while drinking). On the second lap, I took water at both stations and dumped most of it on myself. I felt a little stitch in my right shoulder at the start of the second lap, but nothing too major. Dumped water on me at the aid station where the 4-milers turned. Chugged along for the remaining 2 miles (ran through the mister they'd been kind enough to set up about a mile from the finish). Somewhere around there, the paramedics were treating someone (a runner) on the ground. At about 7 miles, I could feel a hot-spot starting on my right foot under the front of the ball. Passed more people than passed me (I self-seeded just in front of the 10 min group). Opened things up for the last 1/4 mile or so (downhill) and held off a couple of runners. Average HR for the whole run...186...
Course: Both 15K & 4-mile runs started downtown, with a 25 foot rise over 3 blocks. Flat until the turnaround where the smart people (aka 4-mile runners) turned around. The rest of us headed into a large park for 2 loops including a climb and decent (150-200 feet or so). Most of the park was pretty shaded. After the second loop, we had 2 miles back to downtown ending with the decent down to the riverfront. The 4-miler is billed as the fastest 4-miler (the winner ran 18:16) and the 15K as the toughest 15K in Illinois (their words, not mine, but who am I to disagree).
