Swim
Comments: I didn't really feel like I was swimming fluidly until the last 100m or so. I seemed to be keeping the same two women on either side of me and we bumped quite a bit. If not that, I was coming up on guys from the first wave. Sighting wasn't great because the bouys were on our left and I sight better on the right. I felt a bit frantic trying to keep the pace up, but overall it was a good swim. I looked around as I was sighting and didn't see that many pink caps ahead of me. The first thoughts of "um, maybe I'm doing well" arose here. Last year's time: 11:33 (no wetsuit), diff of 3:03 What would you do differently?: Don't think there was much I could have done--maybe found a better hole. Transition 1
Comments: There was a bit of a run uphill through the sand to get into transition. Wetsuit came off fine, but I was a little more dizzy from the swim than I expected so fumbled with my bike shoes a bit. I really need to learn the shoes-on-pedals thing. Last year: 3:16 no wetsuit What would you do differently?: Learn the shoes-on-pedals thing Bike
Comments: I ride 75% of my miles on this course, so I know it like the back of my hand. That doesn't make the hills easier though! I pushed comfortably hard but thought it would have been faster given my effort. There was a small detour to the turnaround because of a road closure, which I knew about ahead of time. I was hoping to take 10min off last year's time, but only managed 5. I still didn't see that many women coming the other direction. My swim wave was women 30+ so it was either my AG or older out there. Wondering how I'm doing position-wise. last year: 59:43 (15.9) What would you do differently?: I had some trouble shifting out of the granny ring again. I've gotten better at taking more distance on these hills in the lower gears of the middle ring though. Transition 2
Comments: Struggled a little with the shoe change but overall pretty good. Last year: 2:01 What would you do differently?: Put on race belt while running out of T2. I probably lost 5-10sec fumbling with it. Run
Comments: Again, I didn't see many women. So now I'm really starting to think I might actually be doing well. After the long hill right out of transition I got my HR down a little but kept the pace comfortably hard. The women I did see looked like they were in older age groups. But, with the course design I didn't see everyone. Had a little water at the first aid station but skipped the other two. I hydrated well on the bike and was really concentrating on keeping the pace up. At mile 2 I pushed a little harder and crossed the line feeling like throwing up, so I guess I gave it my all! Last year: 29:38 (9:33) What would you do differently?: I still could probably have pushed it just a little more a little earlier, but it was a good run. Post race
Warm down: A little walking. Overall ave HR 155. What limited your ability to perform faster: I lost some momentum with the shifting problems on the bike, but otherwise, really nothing. Event comments: Oh, what can happen in a year! Last year, this race was my first ever tri. I moved up an age group this year, but last year's time (1:43:10) would have put me 18/21 in this year's age group standings. The results say I'm 6th AG, but the top 3 women in my AG were top 3 OA, so I'm actually 3rd AG! I really didn't expect this, nor did I expect quite such a good race. I've made a lot of progress this year and am very happy with my season. Last updated: 2006-04-19 12:00 AM

I woke up race morning knowing there was supposed to be rain. It was clear and calm outside though, so I thought maybe we dodged a bullet. Then I opened the radar. A mass of orange and red was about to hit and looked like it was moving slowly. I, as I always do on race morning, tried to convince myself not to go. I ALWAYS do this, but once I get to the race I'm fine. I had to go though, because this race marks the one year anniversary of tri for me. And I was ready to eat up last year's time. So we headed out in light rain.
Set up transition looking for two people I knew were supposed to race but ended up not showing up :-(. The rain wasn't bad and let up just before the start. Did a short run to loosen a bit. Things were slightly less organized this year. I freaked out a little after I picked up my race packet the night before because I didn't have a swim cap or bike number, which are usually in the packet and were last year. Turns out you picked them up at separate tables at the race site, but I didn't know this until I got there and saw everyone walking around with them (still freaking out) and asked someone. But really this race is VERY well organized with great support.
