Overall Rank = 128/215

Age Group Rank = 10/13
Pre-race routine:

I slept terribly. Ate 2-3 mini bagels and a banana, showered, and then headed out to the race.

Set my stuff up, and then it started to rain so I through all my stuff back in my bag. We then were herded into an old barn to hide from the storm.
Event warmup:

I was supposed to warm up? I did some light stretching.
Swim
  • 10m 38s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

For my first race swim, this was both a weight lifted off my shoulders and frustrating at the same time. I seeded myself too low (12 min) and ended up having to try to pass people in some very tight spaces or simply walk/tread water behind them untill an opportunity came along to get by. I likely lost a minute or more of time stuck behind other racers.
What would you do differently?:

Work on my swimming technique and endurance. Also seed meself more appropriatly next time to avoid getting stuck behind other swimmers, which was my own fault.
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

This was a really slow transition. Was too disorganized and also slow in deciding what I was going to do next.
What would you do differently?:

Lay out stuff and put a bag over it to protect from rain. Put bike helmet on handlebars.
Bike
  • 47m 31s
  • 14 miles
  • 17.68 mile/hr
Comments:

The roads were really wet and my lack of clipless pedals and bike shoes caused my feet to slip numerous times, which was frustrating. I also paced myself because I was afraid I wouldn't have enough energy left on the run. But the reality is that I just left some time on the mike course. I also hardly drank any of my gatoraide, which turned out to be a bad decision.
What would you do differently?:

Get bike shoes and clipless pedals, ride harder for the whole course, drink more liquids.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Considering that I already had my running shoes on and all I had to do was rack my bike and grab my race belt, this transition took an eternity.
What would you do differently?:

Don't relax when I get into transition. Stay focused. You are still racing even though it doesn't feel as much like one while you are in transition.
Run
  • 27m 5s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I got hit with a cramp about 2 minutes into the run and didn't fight through it. I also was terrified that I was going to twish an ankle on the off road mud run, so went a little easier on that. After I worked the cramp out, I started jogging again and then started to feel the competetive again once I started to pas people.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more on the bike and eat another banana before the race. Be tougher when I get a cramp and fight through it.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around, eating cookies and bananas.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I didn't eat enough carbs for breakfast, and when the race was delayed it put me far enough behind on food that I was hungry again by the time I got into the water. My overall inexperience with triathlon racing also pwned me, but that will only get better with experience.

Event comments:

The race was pretty fun. I wasn't a big fan of running on the grass, but thats life. The awards/prize give away at teh end seemed to drag on as they had what seemed like a million random give aways. This would have bothered me less if I had won one of them :). Will definetly do the race again next year and hopefully come back stronger and smarter.
