Swim
Comments: Nice swim. I haven't swum much at all (once or twice in August and a few times in Sept) so wasn't really thinking I would have any kind of decent swim but this was fine for my fitness level. I felt good in the water and the only difference is that if I had trained more I prob could have knocked a minute or 90s off this time. One guy passed me and I passed, probably, 10 people. Some people really seeded themselves poorly in this. The only complaint I had is that my goggles, which don't leak in the pool, leaked almost immediately on this! Its annoying but I didn't bother stopping to drain it this time. What would you do differently?: Train more beforehand but nothing on the day. Transition 1
Comments: The ride out of T1 was a beyoch. I am glad I was in an easy gear because it would suck to be in anything big going up that hill immediately (like the guy who came out of T1 with me- he had to zip zag as he clicked into a lower gear). Good, methodical T1...nothing fancy but I didnt forget anything. Left my shoes on my bike and rode up the hill with my feet on top of my shoes. Worked pretty well. What would you do differently?: Go faster? Nah, this was OK. I need a Garmin that is waterproof because starting the 405 up and putting it on takes about 10 seconds, which is wasted time. Lets see, $300 for a new one, to save 10 seconds? I MUST DO IT! :-) Bike
Comments: Found it hard to get into any rhythm on this, but that always seems to be that way on sprints. I tried to push but just wasn't feeling it. The first hills were a struggle right out of transition. I was glad to see my pace improve as the race went on, but that was more due to the course conditions. I took the turns really slow because it was so wet and the rain stung going down the long hill but it helped you stay nice and cool. I didn't get passed and passed about 30 people...all the people who seeded themselves really high on the swim. My favorites were the couple that was drafting, and then crossed the finish line holding hands later. Normally I am good with that sort of thing but seriously people! I slowed waaay down at the end going down the hill- did not trust my brakes at all. They were fine but it cost me a little time. What would you do differently?: Just train more and enjoy the pain. I kept backing down for some reason...just couldn't push much. Transition 2
Comments: Nice methodical T2. Again, nothing special but no dilly-dallying. What would you do differently?: Not much. It was fine. Run
Comments: Tough little run. The uphills were draining - not steep but it was either up or down on this course. Fun to end on a downhill though. I pushed pretty hard and I think the result reflects my current fitness. I think 21:30 for 5K is accurate today- I wasn't feeling awfully energetic. What would you do differently?: Just push harder and train more. Again, on race day everything was fine...pushed pretty hard. Post race
Warm down: Talked to Mike, Andrew and Chris for a bit. PLayed with the boys for a bit and then we headed out. I ended out 3rd in my AG. I had no idea but I wonder what fancy award I missed out on! ;-) What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall fitness. Lack of quality sleep for months! Event comments: Would have given it a "5" but they said on the website that this was in Greensboro...it is further than that in Stokesdale, which is kinda far to go for a sprint. Becky loved it from a spectator standpoint- easy to get around and it didn't take me all day to finish! Nice race...I might do it again; would definitely do it again if it were closer! I am a little disappointed in my bike and run times- would have liked to come closer to 22 on the bike and 21 on the run, but thats OK- the course was definitely more along the Triangle course than White Lake! Had a good race overall though...no major errors. Just methodical and fun. 34th out of 229 men, and that includes 8 pros. Last updated: 2011-07-20 12:00 AM

Up at 5:30; out of the house at 5:49 after eating 3 weetabix, bathroom visit, carrying both boys out to the car and doing the last minute packing up. Right at the end I thought I should pack some jackets, just in case, and that ended out being the best decision of the day- it rained most of the race so Becky and the boys were happy they had jackets.
Nothing. Just getting set up. At a GU and some sport beans and drank about 20Oz of accelerade in the car.
