Pre-race routine:

Had a banana and jumped in car at 530 to head down to the start. Luckily we got a parking space right by the entrance - tip on parking most people parked well before the entrance. There was plenty of parking closer on the road just past the race venue.
Event warmup:

Quick paddle in that cold water.
Swim
  • 29m
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

Happy with the swim given the cold and the altitude. I did have a brain freeze and limb numb feeling on the last 1/3 of the swim. Had to breath every 2 strokes as well.

What would you do differently?:

wear a full wetsuit, but the lake was much colder than usual because of the late snow.

I am out here on vacation and to do vineman so not packing 2 wetsuits

Transition 1
  • 05m
Comments:

Ok had to sit down and get my breath back and get some feeling back in my feet so t1 was slow. Also put on a bike jersey, skull cap and arm warmers.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing I just suffer at altitude so just need to keep breathing under control
Bike
  • 1h 53m
  • 24.85 miles
  • 13.19 mile/hr
Comments:

I drove the course and knew I needed to just take it slow and easy to not kill myself in finishing this, the race was a pre vineman training session. I usually like climbs but had no idea what the run would be like if I went hard so just went slow keeping breathing well under control.

What would you do differently?:

I had my tt bike with me which was fine but using a better gear ratio would helped.

Next time I would push much harder
Transition 2
  • 02m
Run
  • 1h 03m
  • 6.5 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Ok run, no aid station till after mile2 and then fairly regular. After mile 4 there is a hill that I had to walk and then the rest is a bit undulating
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

hot dog and salad, the BBQ was good and then had a recoverrite

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Altitude, I am sea level boy. Also the cold water

Event comments:

This is great race and a real challenge for anyone who struggles up at altitude. Even tho my time was approx 45 min slower than my norm for this distance I still enjoyed it. You don't get this sort of terrain back near home (London)

Great volunteers, spectators and participants.

Its also just in a beautiful location and as I climbed slowly on my bike I took in some awesome views.

I Would do it again ( faster?) if I was in Tahoe at the right time next year.
