Swim
Comments: I actually liked the swim. At some points I could see the bottom of the canal so it gave me a sense of comfort knowing all I had to do was stand up. Now, it wasn't the cleanest and around 700 yards in, the smell was REALLY bad. Something got on my goggles and when I went to wipe it off, it went in my mouth. Yuck! I came up spitting it out. I hit the 1000 yard mark in under 20 mins Very happy with that. I knew it was at the 1000 yard mark because it was right before where the sprinters took off from. My last 600 yards were slow. Part of the reason was that I kept looking up for the barriers and the brick walls. I did breast stroke for about a minute at one point because I felt my heart rate was a bit high. Neat experience swimming in the canal What would you do differently?: Probably start a bit earlier in the swim. It was a line up swim. You line up and jump in the water one at a time. It took me over 40 minutes to get in the water from the time the elites went. There were only about 50 people behind me in the swim line. Transition 1
Comments: The bike went well but I felt the course was awful. Came out of the transition fine but within a mile, we came up on a big curb that you had to go over. I went over too slow and my front wheel went 90 degrees to the right sending me over the handle bars. Luckily, I was only going about 2 mph so I wasn't hurt but my back tire started rubbing my frame. I had to readjust my wheel a bit but was able to get it back to normal. As I was adjusting my wheel, another guy came over the curb and did the same thing I did. I am sure we weren't the only ones. The worse thing is that I had two water bottles for the ride. A water bottle for each look. My aero bottle completly dumped its contents when I crashed. So I had one bottle for the entire ride. Not good. Got on the bike and had a good ride. Around mile 5 there were some really bad railroad tracks. My water bottle with all my tools that sits in a cage behind my seat flew out. I wasn't going to let that go. I went back for it. Turned back around and went at it again. Very bumpy road. I was worried about flats the entire time. Came around for my second lap to those darn tracks again. Once again, my water bottle came flying out. ONce again, I turned around and picked it up again. Kept going and hit the mile 20 marker, Went over a bad bump and yup, you guessed it. the darn water bottle went flying again. I wasn't going to lose it now. Once again I went back for it again but when I was breaking, I almost bit it but kept the bike upright. Just one more little bit of drama on the bike. So I was making the last turn off the street to come into the park. We were still on the road though. There was a big group of riders in front of me. Some were going straight for their 2nd loop and some were turning. The lady in front of me started breaking pretty hard to make the turn. I was coming up fast and was going to take the turn fast but someone was passing me on my left. So in order to avoid hitting that person, I went to the right of the lady in front of me. I never passed her though but she was pissed that I was attempting to pass on her right. I really wasn't. I don't know if I should have slowed up sooner or if I should have blown her off but she had some choice words for me. She said something like, I have the right of way A-hole. She used the actual word. I told her I was sorry but its not like we had a long time to discuss what happen. So I went behind her, passed her on her left and she yelled out that she had my number. I think she was a bit testy! What would you do differently?: I taped my water bottle with my tools to the cage but used electrical tape. I should have used duct tape. If I ever come up on a curb like that again, I am going to un-clip first. I also need to get new breaks. Mine are squeaking pretty good. I need to learn to turn better. Otherwise I was really happy with the bike. Bike
Comments: I would have like to have known what my split would have been if I didn't crash and have to go back for my tools. What would you do differently?: Tape the water bottle on better. Transition 2
Comments: Slow transition but had to load up on liquids. Run
Comments: I actually really liked the running course but might of went out too hard on the bike. I was pretty tired the first loop. I ran the second loop faster than the first. I was a bit dizzy the first mile. For a person that use to rely on the run, my run isn't very good right now. The knee never hurt so that is a good thing. Just have to start training harder. Talked to a really nice couple on the run and that really helped. The run was slow but I felt really good the 2nd loop and I am really happy that my knee didn't hurt. What would you do differently?: Brought one more gel on the run. Post race
Warm down: Sat in the transition area talking to the guy next to me. He was telling me all about Louisville. Saw another friend after the race and it was nice to meet her. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training, especially running and the weight I have gained. Event comments: The food tent should have been closer to the transition area. Going to the bathroom way too many times.
I actually swam before the swim. I usually just get in the water and start swimming. I think this helped today. Water was colder than expected.
