Swim
Comments: Wetsuits were NOT allowed. Speedsuits WERE. This is important to note, as on the website leading up to the race, it said that neither would be allowed and then at the mandatory pre-race meeting they allowed speedsuits. Also, they did not allow competitors to wear any leg compression during the swim. This was NOT mentioned or written anytime/where before race morning, but was announced 15 minutes before transition close. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 1
Comments: This time includes running from the swim exit to transition. It was stated that this distance was approximately 250 meters, it was probably 2 if not 3 times that. Putting compression on "under-pressure" is annoying, but being wet actaully made it easier. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: There were 2 aid stations on the bike, volunteers were great, no issues getting bottles. You do NOT get your bottles you ditch back, so bring throw-aways. If having other athletes blatantly draft while you work your ass off cutting your own wind, then do not do this race. A group of 5 guys effortlessly blew by me while riding 3 inches off each others wheels. Also saw two actual PELOTONS! 20+ riders in each. I didn't see anyone in the penalty tents, my buddy said he saw three, I guess penalizing 1% of violators is cool... I could rant on this for a while, but I won't since I blew-up on the run, so this really didn't affect me anyway. What would you do differently?: So, here is the problem, I was trying to take enough fluids on the bike to set me up on the run, but started to experience stomach cramping so had to lay off. This had dire consequences... Also, probably went out too hard, but my racing is always "all or nothing," today it was the latter. Transition 2
What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: This is a text book example of a "bonk" and is pathetic. Immediately off the bike I developed cramps in my quads and then they progressively got worse and traveled to my calves, biceps, neck, and stomach. To be honest, going from 6th to 38th in my AG over the course of the run is just plain embarrassing and I don't plan on letting it happen again. If I could list this "Overall run" as horrendous, I would. What would you do differently?: Race "temperate" 70.3s. Extremely hot races only complicate my already pain in the butt nutrition/hydration "issues." Post race
Warm down: Hobble around. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nutrition/Hydration. Event comments: With the exception of a couple "nit-picky" critiques (the speedsuit, compression sleeve, and distance marker comments) this was a very well RUN race, that has potential to be quite fast (if you train in consistently HOT weather). A special shout out to the volunteers. Essentially they were a bunch of high-school age kids, and while normally I would view this as a potentially bad thing, they did an absolutely FANTASTIC job. One young man actually ran my buddy down with ice after the volunteers couldn't have it to him by the time he ran through the aide station! Last updated: 2011-08-08 12:00 AM
