Swim
Comments: First 200 meters or so felt like I couldn't get my breathing stabilized and felt like my legs had bricks attached to them. Once I calmed down, I could feel myself going faster. Although I don't know for sure, I don't think a single person passed me during the swim, and I passed a bunch of people. What would you do differently?: Have my wife drive me from Transition to the swim start, and get there with time to warm up properly! Transition 1
Comments: one of my faster transitions. I actually ran from the swim exit to my bike and focused on going fast through T1. I think this was one of my faster transitions ever. Didn't wear socks or gloves. That helped. What would you do differently?: I forgot to reset my computer, so my average speed reflected me walking my bike from the car to the transition. I went out a little hard on the first half, but I felt like I was leaving enough for later (at least at the time). Bike
Comments: went out pretty hard, but thought it pace was sustainable and wouldn't cause me to blow up on the run. Wasn't totally wrong, but partially. Felt pretty good on the bike, but had to stand a couple of times to relieve pressure on my lower back from being aero. Guess I haven't trained as much as necessary for a race like this. What would you do differently?: train harder! Transition 2
Comments: again, one of my faster transitions. I definitely need to invest in quick laces though. Spent entirely too much time tying my shoes. What would you do differently?: quick laces. Run
Comments: it hurt. I did the math and knew what I had to run to get a PR. Unfortunately, I knew I'd PR even if I did a fair amount of walking. Not sure I could have gone harder anyway, but knowing I'd PR gave me mental permission to not go quite as hard as I might otherwise go. Ashamed to admit that, but it's true. What would you do differently?: Leave my watch in T2!! Go as hard as I can! Post race
Warm down: chocolate milk, water, and Gatorade. Walked around Transition area, met with my family (great that they were there to see me finish!) and found some friends to exchange war stories with. Kept walking, and walked some more. What limited your ability to perform faster: It was relatively hot and humid, and of course I could have been in better shape... Event comments: Great race, and a great course. Doing a Tri in downtown Indy was awesome. The transition area was a huge grassy field near the NCAA headquarters and was a perfect location for the event. Enjoyed it thoroughly. Will definitely come back. Last updated: 2011-08-08 12:00 AM

Slept like a brick, and woke up immediately when the alarm went off at 5:30. Coffee, two slices wheat bread w/ PB and honey, and a glass of skim milk for breakfast. Out the door with two of my kids in tow at 6:00 sharp. Sipped a Gatorade driving downtown. No traffic; got a great parking spot (free...even better), and walked to the transition area. Checked in, got set up, and kept myself occupied talking to a whole bunch of people I ran in to. Played a game of Cornhole with my kids at one of the vendor tents, and generally just horsed around the transition area.
None. I didn't even really give any thought to the event; I was too caught up in talking to people and entertaining my kids. Wasted so much time in Transition we had to almost jog to the swim start at the top of the canal a mile away. That was my only warmup, since I barely got to the start before it was time to go.
