Swim
Comments: I did not train for the swim and because of my calf injury I was afraid of cramping up so I went with the 10+ minute group. I spent a lot of time swimming around people and I wasted a lot of energy in the process. From what I saw many folks were lining up for times that they could not actually keep pace with which probably drove some of the competitors nuts. What would you do differently?: Log some hours swimming and go with a lower time group on the next go around. I keep panicking when I am in traffic and resort to the breast stroke and that doesn't help much for the time. Transition 1
Comments: First time in transition in over 11 years. Lets just say I was very disoriented. I was in a great spot to enter the ride and that is the only reason for the time not being longer. What would you do differently?: Try to keep my cool and slow down. I tried to move to fast and probably wasted 10 seconds in the process. I will also practice at home pre race. Bike
Comments: Since I swam near the end I spent most of my ride weaving in and out of traffic. There were may times when I could not pass on the left. I don't really have any races to compare to so the course was great overall. I was just trying to beat my wife's MPH avg from her two previous races and there were not too many turns so things worked out. What would you do differently?: Need to research some basic training routines to improve my power so I can increase my Pace. Transition 2
Comments: I was cramping when I was getting off of the bike and it took me a while get my shoes on. I probably should have sat down because I almost lost my balance. Also almost started the run with my helmet on. What would you do differently?: Again, Practice the transitions! Utube videos alone will not help you! Run
Comments: I was surprised that I held the pace I had. A crowd of onlookers cheering me on definitely helped. I would have preferred a course without cobblestone and all the twists and turns but I am a new-bee so I probably just need to shut up and get used to it. What would you do differently?: Work on biomechanics. I have IT band syndrome so I do not train for any running with the exception of what I do at crossfit. Post race
Warm down: Need to take the warm down more seriously next time. Have a plan and execute. What limited your ability to perform faster: Calf injury. Event comments: I had a great time at the race. It was really inspirational seeing such a wide range in age and body types. I saw one bike that probably could have been overtaken by a tricycle and it made me realize that I need to have fun and that is what I did. Overall atmosphere was great and I will do this race again. Thanks to all the other competitors for their great spirit and motivating energy. Last updated: 2011-08-15 12:00 AM

Had a pulled calf muscle the night before and was not sure that I would even participate. Have only done one other triathlon in 2000. Ate Chinese noodles with beef had a beer and went to bed praying that I would be able to walk okay in the morning.
Not much. We rode our bikes to the race the morning of the race from about a mile away. I saw many folks warming up in the water which seems like a good idea for next year.
