Total Time = 1h 14m 51s
Overall Rank = 107/498
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 23/61
Pre-race routine:

woke up at 5, showered, stretched, ate oatmeal. Packed up and met Kurt who picked me up at 5:40.
Event warmup:

got a good spot on the rack and warmed up by stretching, running, and ballistic exercises.
Swim
  • 11h 32m 4s
  • 500 yards
  • 2h 18m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt ready to go for the swim, so I started up front to avoid the mosh pit. That worked well, a lot less contact, and I started quickly. Felt like I was moving slightly below my intended speed, and i was based on my time. slightly off course a few yards here and there. Goal was 11, hit 11:30.
What would you do differently?:

go faster, and sight better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

goal was 1:30, close. My timing chip was falling off and it took me about 15 sec to take it off and reattach it.
What would you do differently?:

put my timing chip on a lot tighter
Bike
  • 32m 46s
  • 11 miles
  • 20.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on the bike. Goal was 33 so I beat that slightly. Could have pushed slightly more, but happy with this time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

goal was 1:00, close again. could only get one foot out of bike shoes, so I ran w/ one bare foot and one bike shoe. Cost me a few sec. Shoes didn't slip on easily as I would like.
What would you do differently?:

find something to help me get shoes on faster.
Run
  • 27m 33s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

I was very tight at the beginning and calves felt almost cramping. stopped to stretch for about 10 sec and helped a lot. Legs felt heavy and tight. 1/2 way through had a bit of diff breathing. Ran 7:49 mi pace the week before at Castaic, and was at 7:45 mi in training, so this time was very disappointing. Goal was 22:30, so 4 min slower was not what I was expecting. took about 1 1/2 mi before I could run at a good pace. finished fast.
What would you do differently?:

Train more w/ intense bike - run bricks to prepare legs and flexibility so I can go faster earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

walked and stretched, drank those zico drinks, ate oranges, bananas. Waited with family and watched Kurt come in later.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Tightness and heaviness in legs. Just saw this post about sportslegs, might try it.

Event comments:

I like the race and the community feel. Lots of first timers, and people having fun.
