Pre-race routine:

Packed day before, to bed by 10pm, woke at 5am. Had an Ensure but didn't take my regular vitamins except for glucosamine. Set up transition then checked out swim start/exit and run & bike in/out. Used Bag Balm instead of Chamois Butter, seemed to work well.
Event warmup:

Light jogging in wet suit (mainly to stay warm).
Swim
  • 13m 40s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

Held back some to keep out of the fast crowd, still had one guy that kept swimming over me. Maybe it's me going to my left so my fault, but I had to keep pulling up and trying to get away. Tired me out early, so I was side stroking by 100 meters. Went to freestyle and was off course inside buoy, had to swim back to lane. After 1st turn, went on back for a little bit, that helped but still spent most of the swim on my side. I know I can do better than that from practice OWS, why not in a race? Had to be helped to get out of the lake, but wet suit strippers rock!
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on OWS. I think it is probably muscular endurance as much as aerobic.
Transition 1
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

Passed Dana right out of T1, apparently she had some problems (she was in wave before mine).
What would you do differently?:

Do I really need socks for bike shoes. Try it without in a practice ride (use body glide?)

Bike
  • 49m 55s
  • 16 miles
  • 19.23 mile/hr
Comments:

Went pretty hard, pass an AG right out of T1, met up again on return (last 3-4 miles) traded passes but had to let him go, was feeling L hamstring and still had to run. Passed a bunch of earlier wavers, but got passed by a bunch of pointy hats from the later wave. Some wind on return slowed things down.
What would you do differently?:

Bike was pretty good, just need to ride more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Pretty quick change.
Run
  • 28m 3s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

Was ready for the EIA attack, so slowed up at first sign, walked 25 feet with deep breaths, then started running again. Went slow first 1/4 mile, then picked it up.
What would you do differently?:

Get Albuterol inhaler for before race.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a beer, Muscle milk and water with CY-TRI mates.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Definitely the swim. Run will come but need to figure out how to get swim below 2min/100m.

Event comments:

Best I've been in, had finisher metals, warm pizza and cold beer, along with long sleeve shirts, coozies and other stuff. You could tell they were in year 19, very organized with lots of volunteers.
