Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:00 after a rough night's sleep. Played 18 holes and had probably too many beers the day before. Oh well, this race was for fun. Had a muffin on the way to Williams Bay. Got to the high school for packet pickup, then parked at the marina. Set up transition right near the bike in/run out. The transition area was a clusterf%$# as it was split into two sections split by a small foot bridge and I was at least a quarter mile from the swim start (more on this later). Everyone else was in the same boat as me.
Event warmup:

Had a Gu roctane and walkied at least a 1/4 mile to the swim start. Tested the water. Seemed unorganized as usual. I was supposed to be in wave 3 but now in wave 6. Not sure what time I started as there were no clocks anywhere.
Swim
  • 30m 35s
  • 1584 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Thought I was having a good swim and expected under 30 minutes. Oh well, I had fun. Got into a good rythym and there was almost no contact. The turnaround buoy was a little crowded so we all kind of floated around it before picking up our stroke. Soon was on the beach heading for T1.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. My training has been lacking since July except my swimming so that's why I expected a better time. Oh well, back to the pool.
Transition 1
  • 07m 13s
Comments:

Well I am admittedly bad at T1 but this was ridiculous. There was a long run back from the swim and I had to cross a wooden foot bridge that was not too wide. Those who already had their bikes had to come back across the bridge to bike out so there was quite a jam there. Once I got my bike, I too had to go back across the bridge.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. I expected slow but there was no advantage to being on one side of the bridge or other. I would not have to cross the bridge in T2, but others would so it evened out. This is a bad time but by no means the slowest.
Bike
  • 1h 23m

Comments:

Nice bike course. This was my first race with the new clip on aerobars so I was eager to try them. The bike course was crowded for the first 6.5 miles since the sprint and oly shared the course. That first hill was a killer and I saw people pushing their bikes up. After we split from the sprint, it was wide open. Felt great and then faded a bit with about 5 miles to go. Nice big downhill back to T2. Was on my aerobars quite a bit except for traffic and corners. Just not comfortable yet. Saw my wife right at bike in and she reminded me to smile and have fun (my mantra for this race).
What would you do differently?:

More work on the engine and spending time in aero.
Transition 2
  • 04m 1s
Comments:

Ugh! This is a bad time considering I was set up right by bike in/run out. Not sure what happened here. I did take a few seconds to wipe my face and guzzle some Powerade, but I did not feel like I took this long.
What would you do differently?:

Rack my bike and GTFO of T2.
Run
  • 1h 06m 25s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 10m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew this was going to be a struggle as my training has been lacking and I am nursing a sore right hammy/hip. Fely pretty good at the start but the hills dashed any chance I had of putting down a good run. Once on the flat part of the course, just kind of took it easy and enjoyed myself. Talked to a few runners and was soon coming down the hill towards the finish. Saw my wife againbefore the last turn and smiled.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get back to running and more brick workouts. Probably take some time to full heal my right leg.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a water and walked it out. It was hot in the sun but cool in the shade so found some shade and recapped my race. Grabbed a bagel and packed up transition. Cheered some of the 1/2 participants heading out for their run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not play golf and drink beer the day before. My overall lack of training since the end of June. 2 vacations and an inconsistent schedule. Oh well, this was supposed to be fun and I felt great afterwards.

Event comments:

OK, I am not going to do the usual "bash Frank Dobbs" but this race is notorious for being unorganized, distances off, etc. This year, there were no body markers and the split transition area was a real logistical nightmare. There will plenty of others on here bashing the race and Frank, but there always seems to be 800+ racers. I think that's because this is a nice location and has a good end of season date.
