Overall Rank = 10/414
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 2/36
Pre-race routine:

Normal Breakfast and then met Greg and Buddy at Lifetime to drive down to Clear Lake.
Event warmup:

Ran about mile and half with some pickups
Swim
  • 12m 18s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt like this was one of my better swims overall. The ladies waves went first so there was a lot of traffic to wim through. Was a little dissapointed about the time until I saw the overall winner swam a 10:34 and he had swam a 7:44 (500m) at a local race a couple of weeks ago.

Several people said they thought the swim was long and we had to climb a 6-8 foot ladder to get out of the water and the mat was at the entrance to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Try to find a better line and not have to zig zag around people
Transition 1
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Good transition
Bike
  • 38m 2s
  • 14.5 miles
  • 22.87 mile/hr
Comments:

Course was a single loop around clear lake. Plan was to ride about 10 watts above my threshold. Kemah bridge hurt but flying down the backside was fun. Good head wind the last 4 miles.

What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder the last four miles into the head wind.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Very few bikes on the rack when I came in. I figured I was at least around a podium spot.

Run
  • 15m 8s
  • 2.1 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

The course got changed from a 5K to a 2.1 mile run last week so I knew I needed to run hard. Caught a guy in my age group at .5 mile but wasn't sure were I stood standing wise. At about 1 mile had a guy in my AG pass and i ran with him for a little but I couldn't hold his pace, he ended up being first
What would you do differently?:

Try and stay with the guy who passed me and blow up if I need to
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank a lot of water. Stretched and waited for Greg and Buddy to finish.

I was pleasantly surprised to see I had finished 2nd in my AG and 10th overall. I consistantly place in Clydesdale but this was my first AG podium. Pretty good race and splits for 210 lbs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was HOT!!!!

Event comments:

The bike course being long and the run course getting changed were annoying. I know a lot of people were frustrated with the bike being long and them spinning out their legs to early. Even worse for the olympic distance folks that had an extra 4.5-5 miles added.
