Pre-race routine:

Stayed with family in Kelowna and so had a very early morning. Had cherios, muffin and banana and some water. Woke around 4AM. Arrived in time for body marking and getting water and bike checked. Lots of extra pumps but no water in T1 before the race. Wandered a bit to find my wife and then waited.
Event warmup:

Walked into water. Let water fill my wetsuit. Visited with people for a few minutes and then raced.
Swim
  • 1h 24m 43s
  • 4224 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

A lot of contact on the swim, especially near the buoys and toward the end of the race. Very tight even through I let the early group go to avoid too much contact.
What would you do differently?:

I think I would swim on the right of the buoys which is allowed except the two turn around.
Transition 1
  • 06m 37s
Comments:

It is a long transition. Had help with the wetsuit and great help in the tent finding a seat and having someone get what I needed and bag all my stuff. Loved the help. Wow, the tent was hot! Grabbed water and went to the bathroom. Overall very good.
Bike
  • 6h 46m 14s
  • 112 miles
  • 16.54 mile/hr
Comments:

I road by RPE and just kept things smooth and easy. Ignored the spedo and just tried to ride conservatively. I had no problems with legs, back or neck and it was an easy ride. I ate off the course and the aid stations were well placed and well stocked.
Transition 2
  • 04m 26s
Comments:

They take your bike and whisk it away. Just had to run to T2 bag and to changing room and then out. Pretty easy Except I didn't have a helper this time so had to bag things up and find the drop zone.
Run
  • 5h 22m 22s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 12m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Couldn't keep my HR down for the run and so I ended up run walking the entire run. Legs and knees felt good as well as no feet problems, however I just couldn't keep my HR from going crazy so I ran 1/4 mile, walked a 100 feet or so and ran another 1/4 and then walked aid stations. I was hungry so I ate quite a bit and stopped for porta potty once.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed line. Catcher was very helpful. She checked on all my progress, had picture taken and then I went and searched for decent food and for my family. Very disappointed to cross line and have the same food as I had on the course. No pizza and just gells pepsi. This was the low point for the day. I made a stop at the power-bar table for their recovery stuff and tried to find something to eat and then met my wife and headed home.

Event comments:

The volunteers and course were excellent. Pre-race and post race were okay but not too amazing. They ran out of swag bags and pizza which left a bad first and last impression on me.

Love the course and glad that Challenge will be stewarding it.

Course: Awesome course that is interesting to ride with some good variety. The ride to Osoyos is very fast with my first 38 miles being closer 20 MPH. Riechter wasn't too bad but the out and back seemed really long and Yellow Lake at mile 90 was brutal. Very fast downhills with some road seems that were a bit jarring but a blast. The wind picked up for the final 20 miles but it was downhill so easier.
