Age Group Rank = 3/6
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45. Carol fixed bacon, fried eggs and English muffins. Also had a cup of coffee and some cantaloupe. Got dressed, packed truck and left for race at 4:45. Got to transition around 6:10. Got everything set up. Zipper on bike bag broke, so used camelbak and carried spare tube and tools in that.
Event warmup:

Stayed inside hotel lobby to stay warm. Did some rotating arm circles right before the swim.
Swim
  • 44m 41s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Navigation was terrible. Everytime I raised my head to sight, I was going about 100 degrees in the opposite direction. The swim seemed to take forever. I was surprised that my time was not worse than it was.

Need to get a sleeveless wetsuit. The long-sleeved wetsuit was very warm.

The last 100m of the swim were mud. I swam as long as I could to save my legs and then pulled myself over the mud with my hands.
What would you do differently?:

Keep meeting with swim coach. Practice more.
Transition 1
  • 06m 52s
Comments:

My transitions need more work. I was a little winded after running through the mud to get out of the lake and up the hill to the third transition level to get to my bike. I just sort of took my time to eat and drink and put on my bike stuff.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more.
Bike
  • 1h 37m 2s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 15.37 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt I rode the course pretty well. I'd like to be faster, but I'll just need to practice sprinting more. My gear changes were good. I did get a stiff neck on the bike after about mile 5 and it never really went away until I got done riding.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more bike intervals.
Transition 2
  • 03m 33s
Comments:

This was a pretty fast transition for me.
What would you do differently?:

Just practice shaving seconds off.
Run
  • 1h 03m 36s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I was pleased that I ran most of the way. I walked the water stops. First water stop had Gatorade that they didn't put enough water in. Tasted like syrup.

I did run the hills and my calves and ankles are still talking to me 24 hours later.
What would you do differently?:

Practice running more and get a little faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Had Gatorade and water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

If I really knew the answer to this, I would fix it. It's my first season, so I just need to keep plugging and learning.

Event comments:

Beautiful location and beautiful weather. Plenty of volunteers. Too many lane changes were not clearly marked. Awards started before my age group finished. Had to go ask for my award. Race did not seem as amateur friendly as all of the others I have been to, but I guess it was a "pro" race.

Course: Right out of transition was a short steep hill. I was smart enough to put my bike in the right gear in transition and I managed to power right up it thanks to training in Austin! There were lots of people walking their bikes to the top. Then there was a short flat section and a long gentle hill. I enjoyed the course, but it looks a lot like what I trained on before moving to Austin. Coming back up the hill with the headwind was a little difficult. The course kept switching lanes from median to outside. Never did figure out why they did that.
