Swim
Comments: I started right at the front of my wave and went off very quickly for first 30 seconds to get ahead of the pack. This tactic worked and after a minute or so three of us had broken away from everyone else. It didn't take long for us to catch the slower swimmers from previous waves, however, and from then on I was constantly having to dodge in and out of packs of swimmers. It definitely felt good to be passing so many people, especially as I took it fairly easy. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 1
Comments: As you can imagine, a transition area containing 5,000+ bikes is somewhat larger than the transition areas I've encountered in Bermuda. Fortunately the racks were clearly marked and I had no problem finding my bike (even though it had been pitch black when I set up so I was a bit worried I may get lost in there during the race). What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: The road surface was not great at certain points, and due to the volume of riders on the course, as well as a number of dropped water bottles in the road, I found I had to concentrate a lot to avoid any incidents. I saw a number of people with flats and apparently there were a couple of crashes as well. The above did not detract from what was a fun bike course, however.I think I'm so used to riding hills that any flat course is like a god-send. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Run
Comments: Felt good until mile 4 and then struggled for the last two miles. I'm not surprised as this is only the second olympic tri I have ever done, and my body is not really used to exerting itself for 2 hours 40 minutes. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall endurance. Event comments: I was very happy with my time and finishing position. My original aim had been to get close to 2:30 but that was before I realised that transitions alone (including the run from the end of the swim to T1) would take around 7 minutes. The tough swim conditions, and the strong wind on the bike course also probably cost me a couple of minutes so all in all 2:40 was a very good performance. Last updated: 2011-09-04 12:00 AM

Alarm at 3.45am to get bike set up in transition as soon as transition opened at 4am. Was back in bed for 4.45am and slept until 7am. My wave didn't start until 8.50am, and transition closed at 5.45am so I figured it made sense to get to transition early and then go back to bed for a couple of hours. Staying in a hotel (the Hilton) near the event was a great idea!
Ate a banana and a yoghurt two hours before race and then a power bar and some gatorade about thirty minutes before.
Competitors are not allowed in water before start so did not do a warm up.
