Pre-race routine:

This was the first Tri of thhe season and I slept very well and went to bed early. I shouldn't take so much stock in this race, it is only a sprint and not an A race, but I get excited about all my races. Got up at the usual 4:30. Ate 2 flax plus waffles, protein/fruit shake, apple sauce and coffee. Put on some body glide in my crotch area, yes my ass was chapped, not because I was mad. Wore my World's uniform because I wanted to ride with a top in case it was cold out and that's the only one I can swim in. Plus it had my name on my BUTT! HEEHEE. I think my dad got a picture of it so I will put it in my album when I get it. Threw all my stuff in the back of the Exploder and was the first one to the race sight as usual. Matt and Jen were second, I was so proud. I helped the RD set up about 10 bike racks. Set up my Transition spot and talked with Matt and Jenn and some other friends I knew there. Including my rival Kerri who called me out so he could beat me. More on that later. He is really a nice guy and a friend. Ok, drove the bike course with Kerri and noticed 1 street had broken glass all over it from a party the night before. The RD got it swept before race day. I still can't believe I raced in the neighborhoods of Commerce City of all places. I don't care for Commerce City. Got ready to warmup, the transition spot was ready. I decided to go with shoes on the pedals today. i usually do.
Event warmup:

Short run with Kerri around the dog track, which was part of the run course, and go get ready to swim. My wave started right at 8. I was in the first wave and the 3rd swimmer in my lane. The guy that passed me had the fastest swim of the day!

Comments:

I was placed in the first wave by request of a friend of mine who wanted to race head to head with me. That was the 4 minute and under group. So he talked to the RD, (who is a friend of his) and he put my time down as a 4 minute 300. I do it in 5 minutes. I was the last of the 3 in the lane. We went off at 5 second intervals. So I knew I would get passed, I just wanted to make sure I was out of the way before they got to me. Both swimmers passed me and I waited at the wall. They were both right there at the turn. I had to kick it hard to get out of the way. I was passed by the first guy at 150 yards. My god was he fast! The second girl caught me at 200 or 250, I can't remember. I just know I was the 2nd to last out of the pool. I felt like I was flailing my arms the whole time. I forgot my whole stroke completely. I was flustered from the start. We got in and he started sending people off and I couldn't even reset my watch. So no idea on time. I thought I was just under 5 minutes. I had done this the week before and was under on 2 other occasions. Anyway, I got out and ran quickly over the rubber mats to get the hell outta there since I looked like a fool who shouldn't have swam in that group. I didn't hold up the next wave though, they went off every 10 minutes. So the next group even had warm up time.
What would you do differently?:

Be a faster swimmer. Which is not going to happen.
Transition 1
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Good quick transition. Helmet on, glasses on and run with the bike to the exit. Passed one of the 16 people I needed to catch in T1.
Fastest T1 split of everyone. Happy with that
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Good T1

Comments:

Great ride for me. I was about 4tht or 5th fastest bike split. I pulled away from Kerri and put over 3 minutes on him on the last lap.
First lap I almost missed a turn and had to lock up the brakes. My back wheel went out and I saved a crash and had to go around a car coming right at me. i passed them on the left side of the road. Scary! A few people missed some other turns. THe police did not guide us very well and were even telling people to turn in the wrong places. I missed the turn because noone was standing there and there was only 1 cone there.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Second faastest T2. Damnit! I always want to be first here. Another guy posted 31". A guy that I was swicthing places with on the bike the whole last 2 laps, got to T2 and the same time. I beat him to the mat and then he whipped my ass in the run and was second overall. He missed first by less than a second.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 19m 28s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

SRan part of the bike course and then back into the dog track parking lot which was very boring. The one good thing is that you could see who was ahead or behind you. I could see my friend gaining on me the whole way but he could not close the gap on me. Hooray. However, I did have another guy infront of me that I could not quite close the gap on. It turns out it was the guy who was in my swim lane. So If I was 5 seconds faster, I would have beat him. Decent run, I had a bad pain in my stomach at the half way point that would not go away. I started the run and felt like I could not catch any one. I was slowing down. I was able to pick it up a bit but never felt strong here. My run was marginal compared to others that I have raced against and beat. I guess I have some work to do.
What would you do differently?:

Work more on speed work and muscular endurance. I didn't have much in the legs.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing, drank some beer with Matt and talked to friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Early season. I actually felt good overall.

Event comments:

It was a fun race and I knew a ton of people there. The organization was poor overall. Not enough people in critical areas. Not enough drink/aid stations. The prizes were kinda cheesy for paying 45 bucks. I won a key chain medal, a 3 month membership to 24 hour fitness, and a dickey! Yes a dickey, to wear under my cycling jersey to stay warm I guess. Never seen one before. I really enjoyed hanging out withh Jenn and Matt!
That's all. I think this is my longest race report ever. Sorry.

Course: The curse was flat and fast, except the turns. 3 loops around the neighborhood of glorious Commerce City. The course was supposedly swept 2 times during the week. Well Commerce City is not the nicest city around. So we drive the course and find a section of the neighborhood road covered in broken glass and beer cups. The got it up before the race. THe course had many turns and only 2 long straight sections. Pretty technical in my book.
