The Nation's Triathlon
80+F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 54m 23s
Overall Rank = 501/3879
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 103/407
Pre-race routine:

Banana, 2 eggs, 2 mini larabars, water + hammer gel 15 mins before start
Event warmup:

Dynamic stretching, light jogging.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 0 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

No swim due to river conditions.
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Transition was a mudpit. Upon arriving race morning, I moved my bike (first come first serve rack space) to the end away from the main aisle. Due to timetrial start, transition was VERY congested. Ran to bike in a second set of sneakers (not race flats).

AG Rank: 96/407
What would you do differently?:

If I had a way to run with bike cleats on without them becoming packed with mud, I would have tried that. Also, I should have ran with bike around the racks and not down the main aisle, which was packed with people walking. Mounted cleanly and got away from the disaster zone (mount line)
Bike
  • 1h 05m 10s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.88 mile/hr
Comments:

Super crowded. It was at times difficult to get away from groups of riders as the roads were sometimes so packed that we were riding 3-4 people abreast in a single lane.
What would you do differently?:

Try to get away from packs more.
Transition 2
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

Dismount line was a mess. Way too many people in a tiny narrow chute. I spent a good 30+ seconds washing the mud off my legs before putting on my shoes so that the crud wouldn't drip into my shoes after I started running.

AG Rank: 188

What would you do differently?:

Gave away free time spent rinsing legs off. I didn't plan on having to do that, and probably could have saved a good 30 seconds had I planned for it.
Run
  • 45m 40s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

Slowed down to get fluids a couple of times. Stopped at a portapotty to pee at around mile 3.

Legs started tightening up around mile 2. Chafe hot spot due to shoe seam around mile 4.

Had a great last 1/4 mile kick.
What would you do differently?:

Practice running and drinking. More bricks to prep at race pace. More lube in shoe prior to putting on shoe. Start final kick earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

Struggling to catch my breath.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too many packs on the bike. Chafe hot spot on foot at mile 4 of run. \

Event comments:

Acknowledge that Nation's Tri is a HUGE race. It will be crowded in Transition. It will be crowded in the corrals. It will be crowded on the bike. It will be crowded at post race. Don't do this race if you have issues with crowding.
