Swim
Comments: first 200m I caught a good draft. After the first turn we ran into the tail end of the wave ahead of us. It was at this point I lost the draft. I swung wide the rest of the way and passed a ton of guys. I missed the fastest swim time in my age group by 1 sec. What would you do differently?: be a little more aggressive through the slower swimmers. Transition 1
Comments: my transitions this year have suddenly been clicking. I'm rocking great times here. What would you do differently?: maybe speed up the wetsuit strip but I don't have a lot of room for improvement here at the moment. Bike
Comments: I know I lost a couple of minutes here. my feet were numb out of the swim and I had a lot of issues getting my feet into the shoes. Once I finally got both in my right shoe came unclipped before I could secure the strap. The shoe slipped off and I had to turn around to go get it. ugh!! the rest of the bike went as planned. I rode fairly easy. I was under trained coming in and needed to save some for the run. What would you do differently?: get the shoes on better. Maybe push the bike just a little harder. overall given the conditions and my training, I was happy with this time. Transition 2
Comments: Not much to say. I have got it down now. The only way I could get a better time is to run faster now. What would you do differently?: nothing! Run
Comments: This hurt right from the get go. This is where my conditioning really showed my lack of prep. I hung tough, paced off a guy who passed me early. At the 2 mile mark I started to feel a bit better and set about planning to catch the guy I was pacing off. I decided to try and catch him at the crest of the last hill and use the momentum to carry me through the last half mile which was mostly downhill. It worked perfectly and I finished strong. This turned into a good effort. What would you do differently?: train more ahead of time. Post race
Warm down: drank a FLUID recovery drink. Stretched. Got a massage and walked around a lot. What limited your ability to perform faster: lack of training. I could have been contending for first in my age group with more consistent training before this race. Event comments: This was a great race that harkened back to the old school days of it's roots. Playmakers did an awesome job of running and organizing. Icing on the cake was winning a pair of New Balance Minimus shoes in the post race raffle. I will definitely do this race again. Arrived early, checked in, got an awesome race # 111, an OCD dream! 1 hour prior to race time I started drinking my FLUID drink. I hung out set up transition and basically had plenty of time to reflect on my race plan.
I made a point of getting into the water and acclimating. This is key when swimming in cold water. make sure you spend enough time prior in the water so it does not take your breath away on the start. I felt pretty good at this point.
