Swim
Comments: navigation between bouys really good - deceided to take most direct rout, but that became an issue because then had to navigate around people. As I kept swimming past people I'd get caught behind walls of people where I would have to stop and look for route around What would you do differently?: swim farther to the outside so not as much stopping. Transition 1
Comments: First IM didn't know what to expect at all so OK with this t1 time...big area between tent and bike although bike was at bike out so got lucky. did not change clothes. Stopped to make sure got the sunscreen - probably a really good idea, NO sunburn and it was very sunny. It was a really funny sight watching all of us running around covered in white goo but it worked! What would you do differently?: I had another spare tube, allen wrench and co2 that I stuffed into my rear pocket, will just use bento box next time for that stuff now that I know the inifinit will carry me through nutrition-wise so will have more room in bento box to save a few seconds, and may just move faster, wasn't trying to really hurry, but could have been faster. Bike
Comments: As usual had technical difficulties with watch so didn't know what my pace was at all during ride but that ended up being a good thing for this first time. Just stuck to the HR monitor to make sure my HR wasn't getting too high and then just enjoyed the course. Attacked the downhills as much as possible to get over the uphills - worked out well. So the out and back part was CRAZY - they close the road, it is huge rolling hills people go NUTS - kamikaze nuts so did have some fun dowhills but had to be careful and watch for guys flying by you as you pass people, then there are the guys coming the other way playing chicken in your lane as they fly down three and four across. After that it cleared out a little bit. and the loops were hilly but still fun with the rolling hills. I just wish people would remember they need to pass and then get over to the right because there were always people still coming along to pass. So many people passing then hanging on the left and slowing down and the next person couldn't get around. People didn't seem to understand "on your left" to let others get around. The pro women were on second loop when we were on our first screaming on your left and people had no clue. Not sure how you educate people about that ?? Did not need the SN stop...just kept rolling through 2nd loop - really happy didn't need stop! What would you do differently?: Nothing, did what I had trained to do and being a newby wanted to reserve for the marathon, so it was a good ride. Transition 2
Comments: The nice thing here is you hand your bike to a volunteer so you just have to get to your bag and then to the tent. took by time putting everything on, took fuel belt and cooling towel but next time won't need the four bottles...but I trained with them and didn't know what to expect so just went with it. Really no other issues, now that I know what it's about will improve this time. What would you do differently?: no real issue in transition but what I think slowed my down, but not by much was I was running out of transition and realized I still had all that stuff in my pockets, decided to ask a volunteer to put it into my bag instead of just throwing out. Run
Comments: I had an awesome run - I felt amazing on the run!!! I still just can't believe how great it was. Just kept the legs moving and passing people had maybe 2 women pass me but I went from about a division rank of 22 to 9 all because of the run. I stopped at all of the aide stations and took the ice sponges. It was so interesting to watch my HR drop about three point just because of the ice and water - I would come into the stations at about 156 and leave and be at 153 hR. I took gels about every 5 miles and sipped the infinit in my fuel bottle, of course took water and ice water (to dump in shirt) every stope (every mile). I decided that my "carrot" would be to start taking cola at mile 20 and I'm not sure if it really did much but I finished strong and had the energy reserve to speed up for the last mile. I can only hope to perform the same way in my next IM!!! What would you do differently?: NOTHING :) Post race
Warm down: I shouldn't have stopped :) As soon as I crossed the finish line my knee swelled up and I was having trouble walking, but I did keep walking for about 10 minutes to cool down, then went to get massage and food, then ice bath and iced knee. Event comments: IM Louisville is such a great race!!! For me the time of year is perfect. The people/volunteers/town/everything is just amazing. The fourth street live finish is really cool. Bars lining the finish so people hanging out everywhere, high energy. I really can't wait to do this race again. I will be back next year! Last updated: 2011-09-17 12:00 AM
