Swim
Comments: Since I hadn't been swimming in so long I decided to set my tempo trainer to 1:07, faster than what I've done in training and races. I this worked out well for me. My goggles fogged up shortly after the start. It was nearly impossible for me to see ahead of me. So I paused to wipe the goggles and that made a huge difference for sighting. I managed to get around the other swimmers as I caught up to waves ahead of me. I felt pretty good at the faster pace, and felt like I was moving through the water rather than swimming in place. What would you do differently?: Figure out the fogging goggle issue before the race. Increase the tempo trainer for next year. Transition 1
Comments: The beach was over 1/4 mile from transition which meant for a good run out of the water. Since I've done this long transition run before, I knew to bring flip flops to the beach. I was able to run quite quickly in them, passing others in my age group on the way to T1. I also had plenty of time to strip my wetsuit halfway down and remove my goggles and such well before T1. My wetsuit got caught on one heel a bit. 2nd AG, 22nd overall What would you do differently?: Maybe try starting the bike with shoes already clipped in. Bike
Comments: Not a lot faster than I've been on this course before, but I think I'm getting a little faster on the hills and able to keep up my speed for the finish. It was nice doing the course without it being so crowded. What would you do differently?: More hill training. Transition 2
Comments: Quick transition. Kept everything simple. 8th in AG, 41st overall What would you do differently?: Jump off the bike without shoes? Run
Comments: Ran hard, 2nd mile was feeling tough, but came back around for the final mile feeling stronger and stronger. My heart rate reached 188, which is 3 beats/min faster than I thought my max was. So I can increase my training zones a bit. What would you do differently?: Not get injured next year so I can have more quality runs again. Post race
Warm down: Job a little. Jump in the lake for about 5 minutes. The cold water felt great. Drinking and eating a little with some stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: Really good race to finish the season, my best yet. Event comments: It's nice to do such a familiar course, and not so crowded. It's a challenging course and not too far from home. But it's expensive for what it is. I may not do it again and look for new races that don't cost so much for a sprint.
